I am looking at purchasing an 80. Not sure how to post the link but its in Chapel Hill and there is a link on the ONSC site as well as the classifieds on MUD. I know nothing about 80's. Its a 93 with 157k, has lots of extra's and he is asking $9k. It does not have lockers but looks like a good deal to me. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated as I know nothing about the 80 series. I read through some of the info on the 80 section on mud but I would like to hear from some of you guys about this particular 80. Thanks in advance for the advice.

IMHO I would want lockers, is the truck suppose to be originally from NC? seems like rust on hardware in engine bay. Would want to see under seat covers.

I know about the lockers I wish they were there as well. The guy bought it in 2007 it was owned by a couple in Florida but it lived its life in Boone at their mountain home. I cant tell from the photos about the rust, he is saying their is no rust on the vehicle anywhere. Do you guys think it is a good deal, anything with the year 93 I should be concerned about? My thought was grab it and add lockers to it most everything else has been done to it and probably the way I would have done it as well. Any other 80's out there that you would buy before this one? Thanks again guys.

This is a pic from when I sold my wifes 80 (with about 180000miles)- which we had when we lived in Charlotte and here in GA. Notice the hardware on the aircleaner. Note that its not a kaymar rear bumper, just the add on for a tire carrier to a stock bumper. I don't quite get the 7500-8500 PM with brake fluid that dark.

I'm not saying that 80 is a bad deal, just you need to run a carfax and look it over REAL good if your serious about it.

I see what your saying about the parts around the air filter, looks rusty from the photo. I am talking to the guy about a possible trade/cash deal for my wife's 2000 Xterra, no deals are being made yet. Maybe the winters in Boone left some salt under the engine? Any threads around here kind of like Marshalls " Buy a landcruiser 40 series one" but specific to the 80 series. If not what should be some of the top things I should look for, I am thinking about heading up to Raleigh this Sunday possibly.

93 isnt a bad year but without lockers 9k sounds a bit high. You can find good used 80 series trucks all day long on Craigslist for between 5-8K.

90-91.5 have a 3FE which isnt a bad engine just not enough for a truck that size.
93 they switched to the 1FZ engine which is a great engine. They rarely rust unless they have been in a realy salty place, 95 and later are preferable bacause they switched to OBDII and a better engine managment system.

You post a link by copying the web address line and pasting it here.

Way too much $ I dont know what truck you are looking at but with miles like that and no lockers it just not worth it. Unless its loaded to the hilt.

Before I bought my 80 there was a guy on here selling a lifted, locked, 180K miles, custom front bumper, 37's on beadlocks for $4K. I ended up buying mine with 31K original miles for less than $9K, with no lockers. I wanted lockers too, but I couldnt turn down the mileage.

i saw that one..... looks nice, and got some nice goodies. I think its a little high but costs are not misrepresented. Just sux for him cause he prolly bought right before they took the dive in prices and added a bunch of gear. Watch 93's for the semifloat rear axle too. Slee has a good link to learning the differences b/w the years. if it were a 95+ and locked id say that price may be worth it. try 7500 ?

third post down has the link to slee's information.....

Brian, there's a '95+ 80 for sale at the "boat place" on Carowinds Blvd. and an earlier 80 for sale on 21 Bus. in Fort Mill. I don't know the asking price for either one but they both look like they're in better shape that the one you're talking about. I'll stop by tomorrow and get some info. Neither have lockers.

Thanks I appreciate it, I am actually out of town right now and would appreciate the info.

Looks like a good start but too much $. But then again many of us on MUD are cheap compared to the outside world. Sounds like the guy didnt do any of the work himself either, which can be good or bad. Hes def in the hole on it by looking at how much he paid to have some of those things done. Keep your eyes peeled and maybe something will come avail. (Although prices might rise some now b/c of fall and winter coming.)

It can be tough since CLT always seems to have higher prices than the surrounding area. Being willing to travel will help.

A few thoughts from my perspective:

1. I would not settle for an 80 of any year, condition or mileage without f/r lockers. It just doesn't make sense with the available (and growing) inventory on the market.

2. Patience is a virtue during your search. Someone is always going to have a better deal, lower price they paid or story to tell. Ignore all of that. Focus on what you want and the associated value to you. Take your time and you'll find what you want without having to compromise.

3. Go drive a few when you get a chance. The more you drive and look at in person, the more you'll be able to focus and prioritize your wants and needs. I am in CLT and while my 80 is not stock, you're welcome to come by, check it out, kick the tires, take it for a spin, etc.

Thank you all for all the advice. I am still talking to the guy but I dont think he is interested in dropping the price to what i am offering. Please let me know of any good deals that you might know of. Thanks again!!!!

all very good advice, I am following it myself, as I am looking for an 80,, but it has to be locked and insome ways I prefer stock, as I trust my own work over someone elses,, but then again, if you add the price of the vehicle to the mods lots of people have done, you can get a modded vehicle cheaper and quicker than you can do it yourself,,,

good luck on your search,, but 9k for a 93 w/o lockers is WAY too much,, IMHO it is too much for a 97-98,,, I found 2 in the 6250 range locked with 160ish miles,, I might bite this weekend,, one is close to me one is 1k miles away both stock,, another is local 94 locked, stock but lots of little problems (rear locker not engaging etc got the owner down to 4600, from 5200, but I wanted to pay less,,,) PM me if you want his info,

May pass along the other one I messaged you about if your passing on it.

I saw a white 80 on 291 yesterday south of I-85, I will try to stop and look at it today, for either of you.
