Lexington is just up the street from Salisbury if you need someone to put some eyes on it.
I can do the pictures he might not want to show you.
It's also not that far from Charlotte, if you are going there this weekend.

Im not sure how motivated to sell he is - I asked him about giving his FJ a look-see this weekend, he says he'll be leaving for the weekend...so that cuts me out of seeing while we're in Charlotte..if he'll give you the chance - Id love to see have your input!! If you do go, let me know and Ill PM you my email..

If he sends you pictures and you are still interested, I will go up next weekend and take a look. The price does seem a little high, but it could be more than meets the eye at this point.
Was trying to get to the meet this weekend, but a camping trip to Mt. Mitchell came up, so I'll go where it should be cooler.

Below is a link to a '76 for sale in Iva, SC (not far from Greenville, SC) that looks good to me (an awful lot like mine when I got it) and the ask is $7kWOW 1976 TOYOTA LANDCRUISER FJ 40

I emailed him - thanks for the heads up..Only 3 hours further than Charlotte..Ill give him a call and see what he has to say..I guess my only big issue would be getting it back to Jville NC on short notice :D

Just talked to him on the phone - says he just had a looker come over..wish it was someone from here - maybe I should post over on the SC clubhouse..Says he'll shoot me some pics..

I know the guy selling this in southern pines. Its a 1970 with three on the tree. Asking $8k but I think I can talk him down. The body is in great shape with the only rust at the tailgate. All fenders and floor boards look to be rust free. It runs really nice. Needs some brake work and a couple minor things. It comes with a parts truck including a set of axles, lift springs, some oddly marked engine, and the set of five original steel wheels are there. If you are interested, I'd facilitate having somebody with a greater knowledge of 40s to come look at it and drive it. Darin? ya there?

Let's backup for a second... what are you wanting to do with the truck? Daily driver, super clean resto, trail rig, grocery getter / weekend toy???? For the amount of money and price range you are looking in, we may be able to better chime in (if you really want us to at that level) on what is a good deal FOR YOU vs. a good deal in general.

I second that.

Daily driver..not my primary vehicle..I dont mind minor work needed..
itd be grocery carrier, camping, carry the dogs around and pull our little boat around. Im a huge tomboy so show quality is nowhere on my radar..Ive got time to tinker - but not to pull an engine..Its pretty new to me..I dont want to spend more than 7k on the initial purchase..I want a decent body shape and a solid frame..otherwise Im pretty open minded.
After this thread/ I moved my search over here to keep from killing every single thread in the forum

I want as much info as you guys want to give! I love details!

Let me know if you are at all interested in that 1970 fj. It's very clean and runs perfect. Started right up today and I know its been sitting for a while. Oil on the dipstick was very clean too.Havent driven it yet but I'm sure he will let me take it for a day. Just feels like blow by in the brakes. I'm very confident he will come down off the price. I don't know a whole lot about 40s and their value but I think it's worth a look.

For that kind of "want", a clean body (as little rust as possible), and a solid drivetrain is what you really want. I've never even driven a 3-on-the-tree 40, but there's a cool factor there IMO. I do know a lot of folks choose to convert them one to a conventional floor shifter (top loader). That truck looks like a great foundation, but I just can't see anything over about $5k-$6k max, personally. that's assuming there is a solid condition hardtop that comes with it. Granted, I've not checked the market on a 40 in a long time (bought mine in '95 and have never once considered selling it :D). Be patient - I know it's easy to get sucked into wanting one right now, and scared one's going to slip out from under you - but there are plenty to be had and doing your homework and searching for a while will give you more comfort in what a good deal really is.

Do you know where to check closely for rust coming through? Like the rockers and rear sill... if you see ANY, go ahead and assume there is a LOT. It grows once you start grinding away the paint. Also check the rear crossmember gussets closely - infamous for rot! Fenders can be had for relatively small cost, but then you are talking about paint - which is another can of worms. If I get some free time, I'll post some photos of what you CAN'T see, based on what you can.

I agree with Ramon... there are great deals out there....

So much good advice...I started to 'multi-quote' and realized everyone has something interesting to say..I do have a tendency to get excited over 'the hunt'..but never once have I overpaid for underperformance - (unless you count my first cellphone back in the 90s)
If I pay a little more than you all advise me too, well, thats my own damn fault..Thats one of the many reasons I love my huz - if I did lose my mind and want to throw money at someone in the thrill of the test drive moment - hell! he'd drag me away before he'd let me get in over my head.
Like I tell the teenagers I work with "you can do ANYTHING you want, as long as youre willing to pay the consequences"
