Hi all,

Since moving to NC and reading about it I've been wanting to do a trip to Portsmouth Island and I think this fall is the time to do it. Talking to guys who have made the trip before there after a hurricane a few years ago there are no cabins so we will have to sleep in tents or trucks. Also, by all reports there will be varying levels of bugs. The hope is by October this will have died down some but be prepared for this! We can coordinate on meals, I'd love to bring my boil setup for a low-country boil, but otherwise you should bring whatever you need to be self-sufficient. After coming along for a few trips I figured I'd try my hand at coordinating my own.

I'm wanting to do a trip out there with at most 5 other trucks, and am aiming at the first week of October with the days on Portsmouth Island being the 6th through 8th (Sunday to Tuesday) with catching a morning ferry on the 6th to the island, and returning Sunday afternoon. I'm flexible on this but I want to allow travel time with Charlotte being a good 6 hours from the ferry terminal, and I'm thinking that the island should be relatively deserted Monday (if it isn't Sunday too). Planning to camp somewhere along the way Saturday night and then wake up bright and early Sunday. Ferry service is available via Morris Marina, I've reserved the last 4 slots on the ferry!

My goal is to explore t̶h̶e̶ v̶i̶l̶l̶a̶g̶e̶ (nevermind it's not accessible from the ferry) and the island, maybe collect some shells, maybe fish, and have a good adventure! The fishing is supposed to be great but I haven't really done it, who knows the ropes and wants to come??

If you're interested reply and I'll add you to the list

Interest list to ride the ferry with us:
- @S.CarolinaFZJ80
- @neslrac

If anyone else wants to come you definitely can you'll just need to catch a different ferry, but it sounded like there were a few single slots left are various times on Sunday.

I am interested also. So if I read your note correctly, this would be Oct 5, 6 & 7th? Stay some where on the 5th, Portsmouth island on the 6 & 7th? Drive home late Monday afternoon? If I do this my main goal will be to surf fish.

Correct. 6th and 7th being the main days leaving the rest to be a bit more open for people with different needs or coming from different areas.

But for us in the Charlotte area (or further south) would make sense to stay somewhere on the 5th together for sure. I'm debating driving back home on the monday or maybe taking the long way home if there's a Portsmouth -> Ocracoke Ferry available (maybe Morris Marina would if you ask nicely? Anyone done it?).
I'm more than happy to eat your fish if you catch anything! I think I still have a old surf rod i'll bring if you're doing that.

Just got off the phone with Morris marina and I have good news, news, and bad news.

They're pretty busy that time of year so only have room left for at most 4 trucks to leave on Sunday morning ( at 10), and apparently no availability to come back Monday afternoon which would kind of force us to stay until Tuesday at 11am or 3pm. I don't mind this as a 1 night trip there might have been a bit short anyways.

With that I'll need to reduce the available spots to take the ferry with us, but if anyone still wants to come they can take a ferry at a different time (she said she had a few single spots left at other times).

@neslrac @S.CarolinaFZJ80 are y'all ok with spending two nights coming back Tuesday? If y'all are I'll go ahead and book for the 3 of us to make sure don't loose it.

If anyone else is lurking and on the fence lurk no longer and let me know this should be a good adventure!

As for the bad news I was hoping there was a chance we could drive all the way to the village but it doesn't sound like that's the case, I think the only way to get there now without your own boat is a passenger ferry from Ocracoke.

I'm good with staying until Tuesday

Just called and reserved the ferry for us heading out Sunday Oct. 6th 10:00 am returning Tuesday Oct. 8th at 3:00pm.

Cost is 135$ per truck and 20$ per person.

Based on her suggestion I booked the remaining 4 spots for those times but can reduce it to 3 if need be. Who wants the last spot on our ferry?

@thecapedcapper , Thank you for handling the logistics. Much appreciated.

FYI,
Don't forget to purchase a OHV pass for Cape lookout. For permits purchased after March 1st ,you must show your printed permit to a Park Ranger upon arrival to North or South Core Banks to receive your ORV decal. Portsmouth Island is part of the North Core Banks. Cape lookout is North and South Core Banks. The cost is $50 from this web site. Recreation.gov.

Note: A printed copy of the permit must be carried in the vehicle while it is on the island. To print out the ORV Permit, log onto your Recreation.gov account. Go to My Reservations, click on Cape Lookout ORV permit, and select Print Permit.

Also, this explains better what I conveyed above.

@jamesurq @Huevo450

Y'all both were interested, will you be able to make it? If you both are that's ok but one of you'd need to arrange your own ferry travel, but when I talked to them it seemed like there were some single spots left at other times close.

Boss man told me to kick rocks when I asked for the days off, I won’t make it

@jamesurq Are you joining us on this trip? If not we will need to cancel the 4th ferry reservation.
