Hey guys,

So had an interesting drive to work this morning. Got off the highway and as I was pulling up to a stoplight my 2001 with 125k on it stalled and the AT light came on. I put it in neutral and it started right back up. Put in it drive, stalled. Got it moving by hitting the gas right as I put it in Drive and drove 3 blocks to the office. Checked the dipstick, no obvious signs of metal, but something isn't right (obviously).

Anyway, looks like another tranny may have gone down the tubes. Do any of the guys up here in Portland have recommendations of shops to use to have this checked out? I have already reached out to Shane and OregonLC up here, but figured full coverage was good too.

Thanks.

Drain the pan and look for shavings, they wont show up on the dip stick. You may also want to pull a sensor or two on the side of the tranny to check for shavings, they are magnetic and will stick to the sensors. To pull a sensor is one bolt, an easy deal but start up high so you dont drain fluid unless you want. If you find shavings then you may want to go through Toyota to get a remanufactured unit otherwise I would give the guys from Metal Tech a call to see if they have a recommendation.

No substantive update at this point. Had it towed to Gladstone Toyota and when it got there it would stall in every gear. They let it sit over night, turned it on in the morning and it died when it went into drive, started it up again and it was fine and has been fine since. They have it again today to see if they can recreate the issues. Pretty weird for sure, though the checking of sensors for metal shavings is a good idea. Not sure which is worse, having a cooked tranny and knowing it, or having some gremlin that has to be hunted for.

No CEL or codes? I wouldn't write off the tranny just yet... in the cold when mine threw a apps/tps code, iirc the A/T light also came on?

If you have shavings on your sensors then it will most likely throw a code. I speak from experience....

So thinking about this more Pat, I think you have a control problem to your Torque Converter. If it was stalling in every gear that sounds like a locked TC.

Somewhere here there was a reference to a harness location and wire that controls the TC lock. I remember this because I was actually thinking of re-wiring my OD switch to become a TC lock switch. (Anyone else remember where to find this link?) Anyway, I wonder if that harness is either corroded or shorted? The fact that it all went away as quick as it came back sounds to me like an electrical issue and not a mechanical one.

Edit: Here's a similar story that, unfortunately, didn't end well. https://forum.ih8mud.com/100-series-cruisers/462298-engine-stalls-when-gear-engaged.html However, none of those self-cured so there's hope...

No CEL light came on, just the AT light, but even that wouldn't come on every time it stalled. The symptoms definitely leaned towards a TC that was locked up. When I first got it going again, it felt like I was stuck in 3rd gear. In the parking lot at my office, I could throw it into first and it would take off and then the shift from first to second (manually) was really firm, not soft like it usually is.

If it were an APPS/TPS issue, wouldn't the truck be left in limp mode?

Yep. That would feel like your pedal was disconnected. I don't know what year they completely lost the cable, but in 2000 there still is a mechanical 'backup' cable that lets you operate the TB mechanically at the bottom 1/4 of pedal travel.

Another tranny bites the dust

well, they dropped the pan this morning and found the magnets covered in metal shavings. Should have a remanned unit installed by the end of the day tomorrow.

As if I didn't plan to before, but now I will certainly be driving this thing until the wheels fall off.

We had this exact issue on a out of state road trip on my wife's 2001 Toyota Sequoia. (2001-2002 had "weak planetary gear sets" from what I found online.)

Rather than attempting to piecemeal a fix and replacing one part on an aging transmission (vehicle had 158k at the time) I snagged a factory reman unit the day after we returned (torque converter was locked so we just drove straight home).
