Well, this is bazaar....
I have an iPhone 4 always plugged into my dash lighter socket.
I unplugged the phone from the cord (cord still connected to lighter) and ALL my static has gone away.
WTF??

Changed the cord to an Apple USB-Firewire to connect an iPhone 6s.....
As soon as the phone was connected....static in radio reception.
Unplug the phone from cord, static goes away on FM. Stays unchanged on AM

Never noticed this in 2 years as the phone is always plugged in when car is driven.

I had the same problem

It was the solid blue wire (antenna) on the wiring harness it is the one looped back on itself. I believe i cut that wire in the middle and that solved my issue.

There is a thread somewhere about this.

Seen this before, not on an 80 though. All I did was unplug his POS radio and plug in his new unit, which also looked like it was a POS, reception was atrocious. It was the coax adaptor plug shown on BAA11S OEM Radio to Aftermarket Antenna adapter

This is not the actual one I used but very similar, I must have pulled the radio 20 times looking for trapped damaged wires and so forth, the blue white wire is for 'auto up' antenna, which worked ok before I took out the old unit. The car I was working on had that facility but it is not on the earlier (if any) 80's.

Check earths, see if there is any noise from faulty suppressors on other vehicle devices, did you put and inline 'choke' to suppress spikes? These are also known to reduce available power to the radio causing it to malfunction.

Check everything and assume nothing.

Dave

Up date:

I pulled the radio out and plugged a new antenna I got from the store, held it in my hand out the door and the reception was greatly improved. Tried it several times with different stations and got the same result, better reception with the store bought antenna.

So my question, has anyone swapped out the stock antenna for something else or are there any other options out there.

Mine has some static most of the time. AM is worse than FM.
On bluetooth, the sound is a lot better (of course I don't expect the antenna to influence the BT connection, but I am referring to the sound of the music.).
I also have a Pioneer HU. I always thought it was the radio's fault.

I think we need pictures. Everyone involved in this mod (antenna cable routing) said it's a PITA.
It's a pain to route it through the fender the way it was originally routed. I ran mine through the big grommet on the firewall. Pretty easy.
