I wouldn't bring a stock truck unless you just want to drive up and down the dirt road. There is some pretty hard core very short runs, 50 to 100 yds. The whole rock crawlen area is only about 2 acres. But if you want to party and watch all the other truck roll over 24 hrs a day, then come on out.

There was a lot of positive response about a Lost Coast trip, but I don't remember anybody suggesting a particular date at the meeting.

I know some people want to do other runs. I can just throw in a date and hope people will show up. Or will some like to head up this run as I posted earlier. It would not be to much fun if you're the only person here.

Lost Coast Run,

Dion we could try for a weekend in Late July or early August, Lets see if any one's interested,

We'd like to go Aug 16-17 weekend but that falls on the Cow mt. run. Two very different types of wheeling. There seems to be quite a variety of wheelers in the club also. Would it be possible to hold two runs on the same weekend?
I explored the lower half of the lost coast about 25 years ago but we were behind gates. Are those roads now open to the public? Sounds like the Ramseys have been in there more recently, maybe they would like to lead even a small group in for a looksee. I know I'd love to get back there again. You can't beat the weather that time of year compared to 100+ degrees on Cow

I know there was organized Jeeper runs up there in the mid 90's. I know that there are area's with trails and camping that you need to know how or know someone who knows how to get to em. The jeeper runs used the main access road but then went off to the north to a camping area along a river up in a valley and I am not sure of the trail/trails used to get there again. I'm in for this.

EXPLORATION and VENTURING on trails just to find out where they go, quit teasing!! This is one of, no wait, THE most favorite vehicular activity of mine. As long as I can get flight clearance, I AM SOOOO THERE.

Lost Coast Run - Aug 16-17 ??

Yeah I think August 16-17 would be good for us too. (Haven't talked to Ryan about that date yet) But with all the other runs and obligations we have that sounds like it would work. It's not too close to Swap Meet, McGrew or the FJ45 run (Aug 30-Sep 1). Cow Mountain - been there and done that a thousand times!

When we went to the Lost Coast before it was in 2001 or 2002 over 4th of July weekend with his parents. It's an easy enough trail to get in since we drove full size Chevys then. We didn't explore and do much wheelin' other than the trail in. We didn't have a regulation camp site. There were some but we didn't use them. But we found a grassy area & had some trees for shade. There are hiking trails up there that we did. Some other people up there had brought fireworks and lit them on the beach. We watched that and had fun watching an idiot in an Explorer get stuck on the beach - Hilarious!! Now keep in mind - it's not like Pismo - you're not allowed/supposed to drive on the beach. And since it's a northern California beach it's not nice soft sand like Pismo either. The beach is more pebbly and sandy and there's lots of drift wood everywhere. But it is beautiful.

Lost Coast sounds like a good replacement camp out to replace group camp at Pillsbury since we weren't able to get that this year. Aug 16-17 sounds good, or maybe even show up on the 15th, make it a 2 night stay. The other dates that might work even though its sandwiched between swap meet and mcgrew would be July 18-20, since not everyone goes to McGrew.

 It's me again! LOL

I Googled Usal Road and found this other Cruiser guy (don't know him) but he posted up some pics and a little commentary on a trip he made in his 80 with his wife & 2 sons.

Check it out if you want to see what the Lost Coast & Usal Road is all about.

Usal Road

I've got pics from our trip but that was before I had a digital camera, so who knows where those pics are for me to scan them & if I'd get around to doing that. :D

This is sounding better all the time. Someone needs to check out the road from Usal to Shelter Cove. I have a vacation scheduled between 7/6 and 7/14 with no fixed commitments. I'd be willing to go check out a route or possible routes if no one else has time to go sooner. Michael can you get clearance? This sounds like your kind of trip.

I figured the common sense idea for a run on a weekend would be to get to Usal campground fri. night. Gather Sat. morning at a certain time and head north. Stop at one of the beaches for a group camp sat. night. Then drive out to Shelter Cove, back to 101 and whatever direction home on Sun.

What I remember was driving down into drainages that emptied into the ocean with perfect beaches (no people)and remnants of old logging complexes. Land locked steelhead wondering what the heck we were doing there? The roads were in decent shape but were used for logging. 20 years later I would think they would be over grown if the road beds are still there. It was private logging property and was gated but we happened to find the gates open one day.:D

It sure was fun driving topless too :grinpimp:
Anyone else have info please speak up

Thank you Dion for replying to my question about the Moon Rock run in Nevada. It was helpful to know a little bit about it.

Make no mistake the lost coast can be a long trip, get you deep in the coastal woods and possibly have nasty weather in and out. Come ready if you are serious we should select/vote/annoint someone as a run leader and start puttin details in the works now. I know I thoroughly enjoyed the little run to Fordyce last year, I just drained the river water outa the gas tank last week. Was there since last october.

I agree with you John. Problem seems to be that there are several members that would like to make this trip but nobody has any experience going through. Nobody has volunteered to be a run leader. Have you been up there? We will anoint you;). seriously, I'd like to wait a month before going and scouting the area. If you can make it up there sooner or later let us know.

I don't see nasty weather being a problem in August. Lions and tigers and bears maybe. I don't see anybody getting river water in their gas tanks either. It does seem like you could use an attitude adjustment . Let us know when you can go and scout the Lost Coast and we'll do our best to follow your lead.Let's all meet at Denny's in Ukiah...you're buying:D

OK, Sheila and I have decided to take a little trip up to Shelter Cove on the 18th of this month. After looking at Google Everything I think we can explore pretty much the entire Usal Rd. in one day. I don't know if there are any roads to the beach anymore as it seems to be a lot of wilderness now. I plan on making a few phone calls to Legget and Shelter Cove this week. We should have some sort of report back in about three weeks. This is of course weather permitting.

Don, try googling the Lost Coast Jamboree and see what you get.

looks like their last run was 2002? A Jeep Jamboree site trying to sell videos mentions that Lost Coast is perfect for the Grand Cherokee crowd.google maps shows Chamise Mt Rd to Usal beach as 25.7 miles in 1 hour 6 min. Map shows 1 road might get to the beach but it's all in the Sinkyone Wilderness. I'm hoping it's not a hiking trail now.

As I mentioned earlier, it's a totally different run than Cow Mt. I've explored Cow on foot, quad and cruiser over the last 40+ years and have never made it to Shelter Cove. Time to see some new country:D.

I'm sure a lot of the wheelers in the club might be pretty bored with the trail, but I know it's beautiful country and perfect for the wagon/family part of the club.

If it's not storming, we're taking off on fri the 18th and coming home on sun. Anybody is welcome for a fuel burnin' excursion:cheers:
