I was having a chat w/ Larry @ Yodaman today when the subject of this area came up again. I've been just thinking of ideas on where we might want to end up as far as our 5 year plan (Family w/ 1y/o). I didn't iniate the area, he did, and it was kind of nice to hear since it's been in the top three areas we've considered off and on.

Things like..

Cost of living?

Temperatures?

Crime?

Work/Employment Climate/Unenjoyment Rate?

Cool Toyota or 4x4 Shops?

Good fishing and boating spots (*aside from Tahoe, Cutthroat, Rainbow, whatnot)?

Family things like parks, etc. *Forest stuff in Tahoe, what is all the managed area stuff all about east though?

*I'm college educated and just coming out of an AA so I am also considering Univ.Nev@Reno for the Bachelor's work and likely a best spot to base work out of since my wife can transfer out there. I'm seeing a lot of great schools from elementary on up that I could easily teach or work as a classified employee until I get any credentials.

We love the Tahoe Basin, were married in Douglass County and have a couple friends who've relocated there who seem to like it enough.

Pics, etc too so I can show the wife would be cool.

Generally lower than the national average

Temperatures?

Nevada is high desert. So expect wide swings in temperature (20+ degrees) from morning to afternoon.

Usually a week or so of 100+ degree high days in the summer, usually a week or so 0 or below degree mornings in the winter (I hate those weeks were the high doesn't get above freezing.)

And wind all year round.

Spring and fall seasons can be quite short.

Depends a bit on where you choose to live. I live down in the Carson Valley and there is little crime to speak of (once a year or so a gang of crack heads breaking into cars/houses, but they tend to get busted quickly). We actually do have gangs down here (such in as in Ranchos), but that seems to be more of a problem in certain parts of Reno/Sparks.

Work/Employment Climate/Unenjoyment Rate?

State wide the unemployment is high, 14.3% (highest in the nation I believe).

The county I live in (Douglas) is a bit higher than that, Carson and Washoe (Reno/Sparks) are probably close to the state average (don't have numbers for them in front of me).

As far as getting a job, that highly dependent on what field you are looking in.

Cool Toyota or 4x4 Shops?

I'll defer to others here.

I'm an avid fly fisherman. This is paradise as far as I'm concerned. East and West Carson rivers are minutes away, West Walker within an hour, East Walker just over an hour, the Truckee (which runs through Reno) is an hour for me. And lots of alpine creeks and lakes within an hour drive. Pyramid for Cutthroat! Various lakes to the east for Bass and other warm water sport fish, and Carp (the bonefish of the Great Basin).

Family things like parks, etc. *Forest stuff in Tahoe, what is all the managed area stuff all about east though?

You won't run out of outdoor activities in NV.

We moved here from CA (after 7 years living in Germany and 10 years in NM). It's been great!

Of course, life style down here in Douglas County is a bit different than Reno/Sparks.

Pics, etc too so I can show the wife would be cool.

Best wishes, Kurt

I spent 8 years in Vegas, I love the Reno area a lot more. If you are into family, outdoors and clean air, this is usually the end of the state to be.

We are a 2-3 hour drive from almost anything you'd want to do. 5 hours will get you to the ocean or Vegas if you get tired of looking at the mountains and snow.

Jobs right now are scarce, they are out there, but you probably should have one lined up before you get here if you don't want to wait 6 months to a year.

Outdoors recreation is everywhere here. I can't think of any place that I'd rather be.

Add to the above: Great time to buy a house here! Residential offerings are below what materials and land cost would be to build right now.

Better have a means of income figured out because I just heard yesterday the REAL unemployment figure is just north of 20% (state % doesn't count anyone that has been out of work 1-year or more and they don't count the folks that for whatever reason chose not to work).

We, relative to 30-40 miles and farther east, here in the Truckee Meadows are in the banana belt regarding weather compared to the remainder of Northern Nevada.

Since we basically live in a bowl we do get, when its calm, a fair # of nasty inversion days here too...not kind to asthmatics or those that mind breathing dust and pollution.

Also better budget for tons o'skin lotion. Its skin cracking dry up here.

If your slant is toward living close to vast amounts of public land for hunting, fishing, exploring, camping, star gazing, etc. this is an incredible place to call home. And compared to California especially our state doesn't have alot of rules. That's good for the rebel in all of us ;-)

It sucks here, you wouldn't like it.:flipoff2:

JK other than one of the most depressed economies in the nation it's a great place to live. I have no regrets about raising my son here.

I agree with everyone else, other than the poor job market, I love it here. I have lived in other places and traveled all over and I still love it here.

Nothing like driving an hour or less and being completely away from people.

Thanks everyone, it seems then that a trip away from home is in order sometime within the next couple of years. I'll have to dedicate some time to check things out more than I did as a kid back in the late 80's to see how well the "Cool Stuff" will support a lifestyle change if we do pull the trigger.

From recent day trips the wind factor and things of that nature I did not anticipate as it usually did not become an issue until late in the evenings by which time we were already in our hotel or back at Sunnyside. As for fishing at Walker, BTDT :D same for tube fishing on Crowley.

*Note to self, remember to not park to close to shore at the Western edge of Walker, once the sun sets the water soaked sand dries up and your 2wd pickup gets stuck. **Bring the 4Runner. ;)

I'm also hearing whisperings about Fallon also. What's the deal out there aside from the base?

Keep an eye on this forum we do a few trips that would be easy for you to go on.

Wind is defiantly something you have to learn to live with here. Just something that goes with living in a semi arid region.

:D Definitely will Dan. *FWIW when would be the best time to bring the family up for something just so they can see what it gets like with the mellow mid-day and howling wind around 3-4pm? May, or sooner to also get a taste of the cold?

Figure we missed out on the PMC MoonRocks trip this year, so that might be in the list, or just a hotel trip.

Spring last about 3 to 7 days here and there is no way to predict when it will happen. :grinpimp:

well we get 3 to 7 days spring in the spring. but we get 3 to 7 days spring in the fall also, so we get 2 weeks spring,3 and 1/2 months summer 8 month winter , not bad
