Ok guys, The Bay to Blue Ridge Cruisers are planning a "big" trip for 2012. One of the places we are thinking of going it the Rubicon. Here are some questions:

1.Best time of year to go, Summer? ( I know the Rubithon, but how crowded is it?) Best week ect.

2.How many days to plan to be on the trail?

3. Some of us have off-highway only rigs. Is it better to go in from the Tahoe side? Droping trailers ect.

4.We will be traveling from the East Coast so we want to be prepared!

5.Last but most important, if we can talk our significant others (wives) into this trip what are some key points, highlights for them to see( besides Lake Tahoe)?
What can we bribe them with?

I have done part of this trail on a ATV from the Tahoe side to the main campground area so I am familiar with that part.

Thanks in advance,
Rob Matzell

If your driving that far run the whole trail. Rubithon is a gerat way to do it. Trail is not to crowded, most of the time. We start mid week. If you do a Wednesday run the trail is less crowded unless there is carnage and that can happen at any time. Plus you with other Toyota's and if need a part someone is bound to have one.

Tahoe would be a must do. South Shore if you like to gamble a little.
4 hours away is San Francisco.

If it is an all out wheeling trip, come later in the year and do the Rubicon and Fordyce.

If you like planned events Rubithon is a great way to experience the trail. If in the other hand you'd like to do the trail at your own pace, I think the best time to to the trail is late August or early September. Especially during weekdays.

SF is a lot of fun. Like Fast Eddy said, wine country is fun too. But you also have the coast. All fun things to do in Northern California in the summertime.

Definitely go in Summer... Long warm days and the lakes warm up. Snow is typically gone by Late May, early June, but it all depends on the snow pack. Last year it was almost July. This year we're still wheeling now since its dry... but the lakes a frozen over!

If you are coming that far, then you may as well spend at least 3-4 days and enjoy the sierras, but you can run the trail pretty easily in two. Since you are trailing your rigs, then plan on 4 days and run the whole trail forward and back.

You might want to park on the Lake side and begin and end the trip with a day in Tahoe, sleep in a real bed and take the ladies for a night out so they get something out of it. Otherwise, either staging area has plenty of trailer parking.

Rubithon is a great event and a fun time to be on the trail... warm fuzzys, and stress free, knowing that good people and parts are their if you need them. Otherwise go mid week and the trail isn't crowded. Holiday weekends and event weekends can get bad, especially if there is carnage. Its not uncommon to get stuck for a couple hours behind a line of rigs if somebody breaks on Cadilac Hill.

2013 shall the grand daddy of all Rubithons, the 25th anniversary!

As a total rubi nubi from this years, I shall give you my succinct version; intense!

Rock obstacle after rock obstacle. Don't relax, as there is another monstrous rock right behind that one!
You can relax once you get to the springs though, and they are gorgeous.

One other word of advice, don't get blind stinking drunk at the Marauder bar and then try and walk to your campsite way over on the slabs. Thanks again Pismo Jim!

We are planning to attend that one, as the one in 2011 was just too much fun! But not this year, got my first Cruise Moab to go to.

A bunch of guys from Olde North State Cruisers NC are planning on going in 2013. any idea on dates? Late may?

Where are u from?

Im originally from the sacramento area lived there my whole life until I joined the marine corps. I've never done the rubicon. 2013 Trip is my graduation present from college to my self.

It is in my avatar, Richmond Va, Just north of you. It is still up in the air but on the "bucket list". I would like to see how many from our club want to go.
