Hey guys, with the lack of snow I'm getting the itch to go offroading but the only places I know about are a few short class 4 roads that dont give me any difficulty in 2wd. So anyone know of places to go in the greater Burlington area? Doesnt have to be much, just something fun.
Public wheeling in VT is getting smaller and smaller and is almost non existent in the winter as the trails become snowmobile only. Where ever you go, make sure to keep it legal and have fun.
I know some of the guys at VT Jeep Assosiation but I'm not a member. Theres also Vermontoutdoors.net but nobody has really give directions to places on there. Thanks rabid for the directions it sounds like some places to check out. Dont worry I'm all about legal wheeling, thats why I'm posting trying to find places to go instead of just blasting through the woods.
Seriously though, just because it's on a map doesn't mean it's legal or even good to wheel on. Some of the class 4s in VT have lost the public right of way to private land owners in the past few years and then you'd be trespassing.
Yup, just a few years ago there was a LOT of trails and old roads that were legal to run (in summer, they were snowmobile only in winter) around Windsor, Brownsville, and Reading. Now those are ALL off limits.

even posting directions to publicly accessible land is frowned upon. its no big deal at all, i just find it silly. i am certainly entitled to that.
we can privately organize it via PM and drive 20 trucks through there so i could really care less how people get together it just makes me chuckle to myself is all.
honestly Pete, it *IS* silly, it's utterly ridiculous that we have to be so secretive with public, legal trail locations.... but it's the unfortunate outcome of the non-stop trail closures up here. we've seen it over and over again.... public trial get over publicized, overused, and closed.

Yeah it is a bummer how much land has be lost. Just a few years ago the Hinesburg Town Forest was open to vehicles but a couple of idiots set a car on fire in the forest and now you cant have a motorized vehicles in it. It makes it so much harder for us guys that go about it the correct way and dont wheel on illegal land.
people setting cars on fire, that is why they should have a tecnical obsticle on the first part of the trail with a sign that says "if you can drive over this you may enter" just an easy solution to an anoying problem

It's always dumb people that ruin things for responsible people. We should stop medicating the dumb people and let them die off faster. The world is over-populated with dumb people anyway.
Let me give you an example. I work offshore as a Commercial Diver. ONE dumb person decided he was going to sharpen his knife, and then hold a rope up and attempt to cut that rope free hanging. DUMB. The guy cut off the tip of his finger, and of course that started a land slide of BS in the company. Now, nobody can have a knife unless they are getting ready to get in the water on their dive. Tenders (up and coming divers) have to use scissors to cut rope now, instead of a sharp knife. All because of DUMB people.
Dumb people are killing our rights to run trails. I can see a need for secrecy. Some dumb person will go out and tear through a trail, screwing things up, drawing attention and killing off another trail. That's why the secrecy, and I aint even in your neck of the woods, yet.
When I got out of the Army I went to a diving school up here in the north east,
tough finding work here and I wasn't interested in going back to Louisiana again so
it didn't work out. School was a lot of fun and it's pretty interesting whats involved in sending a diver down. Most people have no idea.
