I recently bought an M101 off road trailer. The only pintle hook option I found so far is one that slides in the regular trailer hitch (red).
Put this setup sticks out quite a bit. Can I mount a shorter pintle hook directly on the bumper (with the appropriate hole cut out, of course (green)) ?

What setup are you guys running?

SOR lists a pintle hook adapter for 60 series, http://www.sor.com/sor/cat106b.tam?xax=9948 part 75. I have never seen one but would guess you drill appropriate holes in bumper and mount behind bumper. Would be cool to see if any one has installed one. Otherwise, you could drill the holes an make some sort of reinforcing mounting plate to put behind the bumper.

I don't think the bumper can stand that kind of strain.

I would also think you would want the hook to stick out pretty far so as to not have the trailer come in contact with your cruiser when jack knifed.

Then again, I don't have a military or any other trailer, I have just read what others have posted. You might get more action and other info in the outfitting section.

best bet is to clean up that receiver (inside and out), paint it to make it pretty, make sure you have the right grade 8 cad plated bolts holding the receiver hitch to the car and all are in place, and get pintle hook / combo ball receiver (available in lots of places and pricey - if you must have the pintle hitch). keep the pintle hook (shin buster) somewhere handy (like with the trailer that needs it or in the car if you are gonna use it regularly). with the right ball mount adapter you can have the exact height you need to match the trailer tongue.

i made the mistake of leaving a ball mount in one of my receivers that i trailered my boat with. it became permanently 'rust welded' together. no amount of heat, banging or yanking could get that thing out. almost pulled a telephone pole completely out of the ground with a snatch strap and a few whiplash-like fast stops. now i always use some spray on waterproof grease on the insert and in the tube. my ball mount is stainless steel and i keep it in a plastic bag when not in use in the side rear compartment with the jack and tools. i have no use for pintle hooks and just went with a stainless steel Adapt-Hitch-Ball Shank Kit. search with google for this exact copy for the best price - "Adapt-Hitch-Ball" Shank Kit stainless . this lets me change the ball (i have 3 size balls) by just pushing a pin in the ball without even having to wrench. i would consider changing the mount on that trailer tongue unless you are going for that 'look'. or, buy a real bumper made to do the job.

big trailers with pintle connectors will put a real strain on the vehicle... small military trailers would be ok.

Herbert, i have a 101 as well and thought of my options with the pintle when i brought it back from Edmonton to Vancouver Island. I originaly cut out a center section of the bumper as it has the standard holes already in the frame section for the pintle to bolt up to. I just ended up pulling the whole bumper off cause they just hook onto things when wheeling anyway.
Works great for me!
Cheers

The hitch we put on the motorhome hung too low so we just flipped the receiver side over side so it "hangs" up instead of down.

I ran for years without a rear bumper at all, with the pintle hook mounted directly to the trapezoid crossmember, towing my M416 loaded to the gills on a cross-country trip:

Thanks Rigpig and Exiled and everybody else! That's exactly what I had in mind. I think I will just cut a hole in the bumper and mount the hook on the crossmember.

I would recomend plating the back side of the factory bumper with some 1/4" steel. If you do any extraction with that pintle it will pull through the factory steel.

OOPS...The crossmember.

The best part about this.... I now know what a pintle hook is, and what to call that "thing" that I've seen many times but had no idea what it was....

Go mud!
