I use as long heavy plastic coated bicycle cable lock between the trailer A frame and one of my bumperettes.

I'm going to be putting pad locks on my safety chains and the place I bought my stuff said they have a lock specifically for the smaller diameter hole...

http://www.southwestwheel.com/ You can call these guys and they should be able to help you and they are here in Dallas if that's where you live.

Daniel, please make a follow up with info on make and model of that lock.

Talked with Southwest Wheel today at there location and apparently the guy I previously spoke to was wrong...they don't sell a lock small enough to fit it. :( Sorry for getting your hopes up.

I drilled out the pintle lock and used a regular hitch lock it was only a hair bigger

I did the same thing. The one I used is a lot smaller in diameter than the regular lock but a drill can make it work just fine. Just drill out the hole a bit. I got mine at autozone I think. Have seen them at a lot of the auto parts places even walmart. It's masterlock part number 2847DAT.

I have that same lock...I think I'll drill mine out too!

How about a way to lock your pintle hook when you leave your trailer at the camp site and you're off wheeling? Any device available aside from using a chain so people can't drive off with your trailer?

What would stop a thieve to just unscrew the 4 bolts holding the pintle to the hitch? Maybe add a lock nut at the back like those for your rims?

Tack weld the bolts...

ooo, no please don't. I know that it makes it pretty tough to unbolt, but it also changes the metallurgy of the bolt and the nut, and not in a favorable direction. Instead there are two options that are relatively easy. First, use all metal crimp type locking nuts. They're a one time use only deal as they usually destroy themselves and the bolt when removed. Add red Lock-tite to the equation and torque them to the max for that bolt size. It will take major effort to remove those nuts.

If you really want to make removal tough, after all of that one at a time set the bolt head on something anvil-ish with the end of the threads pointing up. Take a ball pein hammer and pein over the end of the bolt like it is a rivet. You don't have to make a total rivet out of the bolt, just upset the end enough that a normal nut wouldn't come back off the bolt.

Good ideas!
