Looked at a 1998 last night and noticed there was a buildup of pink substance around a hose outlet on the back of the manifold. I think it's coolant but not sure. Can someone confirm and let me know if it's big problem? It's got almost 300k miles and they're asking $6k for it. Leaky in normal areas (valve covers, oil pan), but ran fine. Paint is rough.

Thanks

Yes Toyota uses Red coolant not green typically found in other radiators, pink buildup could be a slow drip and the residue you see is likely that. That looks significant enough to address rather quickly but it has likely been happening for a long time.

It also has a look of battery corrosion but I've never seen corrosion go pink.

I'm sure that's coolant; it looks just like the leak in my Highlander when the water pump went bad. Is the leak in the one you're looking at in the area of the heater "T" hose connectors (rear left of engine on top)?

coolant

Hard to tell from the pic what we are looking at, but it does appear to be Toyota Red Coolant (or similar).

If at the back of the engine there are a few connections back there, but the most likely culprit would be one of the Heater 'Tee's', they are plastic and known to deteriorate (particularly the one nearest the drivers side). Couple of stand up pipes back there too. Hose(s) could be leaking there. Shouldn't be too difficult a fix.

coolant. May be worth it to chnge the respective hoses and both t's

my guess is under coolant bottle.

Coolant overflow bottle is at front of engine.

This appears to be at the rear of the engine at the juncture of the intake manifold and the head....just above the #7 cylinder, which is pretty much right under the heater Tee's and hoses.
