What's the torque setting on the pinion nut on an FJ40 supposed to be?
144 - 173 ft-lbs (or 20.0 - 24.0 kg-m)
jeebus how much are torque wrenches that measure that many ft/lbs?
150ftlbs is the limit for a lot of wrenches, its not uncommon. My craftsman was $70, I think?
As I'm thinking on this, I seem to recall that given the slop you're wrenching against, it can be a real pain to do this. When I did it the rear was a piece of cake, but the front didn't leave me enough clearance to "ratchet" the wrench. I think I did it with a floor jack to lift the end of the wrench up and there was some rocking the truck back an forth involved too. Be creative...
I found your thread about the very same issue i'm having with my rear diff. I will try tightening it tonight. Have you had to replace your rear third yet? I'm hoping the nut is just loose on mine so i can bandaid it till i get the funds to rebuild it. Could you hear differences in the noise when you went over bumps as the DS angle changed?
