I don't. There wasn't any rubbing though with BFG KM's 315....

What do you mean there was no rubbing? A stock Michelin spare "rubs".

And for those that are planning to put an inflated 315 in the stock spare location of an 80..... I don't think it will fit. A 33" just barely fits with maybe 1/4" to play with.

If Shotts says he hung a 315 under an 80 then you probably want to see some pics before you plan this yourself.

I know from my truck the LT285/75R16 BFG AT fits with about 1/4" to spare. The guys at Discount Tire didn't believe me until they tried.

If the 315 fits it can't be pretty.

Show some pictures!!!!

Can you buy the Hanna bumper without the tire carrier and then later add it on? With or without any mods to the bumper?QUOTE]

This is what I really wanted to know.

Yes, you can purchase a HQ bumper without the tire swing-out now and add a tire swing-out later. We would need to add a spindle (for the pivot) to the bumper and a mount for the latch. To add the spindle and latch mount is $50.

When the it comes time to add the swing-out, we would need the bumper back in the shop to check to placment of the swing-out position.

Hi Ken -

I was wondering, how easy it is it to remove the tire carrier from the spindle? I know with my Kaymar I just pop the cap, remove the castle nut, and lift it off. They even provide a nice srew-on cover to cover up the spindle shaft. Just curious, as I am interested in being able to remove the carrier altogether on-demand.

Thanks,

dclee,

The HQ bumper pivot works the same as you described the Kaymar.
Pull the bearing cap, then the cotter pin, then the castle nut, then lift off and I can supply a spindle cover.

Ken, you want to comment a bit on how sturdy the thing is w.r.t. to towing with a pintle hook attachment using the 4 holes?

Actually, the tire swing-out on the HQ bumper is as solid as possible, there is very little movement or flex in the spare tire swing-out. The latch locks the swing-out tight to the bumper and the 3500# rated spindle pivot makes for a really solid combination, even with a 37 inch spare and steel rim.

Ken

I'm not saying ths swing out isn't solid. Just that the best method for latching is for the latch to pull tight in the direction you want it to hold. Since you want the latch to hold the swing out against the bumper that is the direction it should pull. It works the way it is because the latch actually pulls slightly into the bumper (the piece with the handle is slightly more outward allowing it to pull into the bumper a little). IMO it's better if most of the pulling action of the latch is into the bumper.

I am happy to answer any questions

The pintle mount is very strong, can pull more than the 80s weight. The rear of the HQ bumper supplies holes to access the 4 pintle holes. Most of the strength comes from the stock rear cross member that the pintle actually bolts through and the 3/16 thick plate bumper doubles up against.

safe to tow 5000 lbs you think? IIRC, there was a fair amount of mixed discussion on the OEM pintle including some statements that the OEM cross member is not that strong. But then sounds like you are pressing against it with the bumper?

6 bolts each side to tie the bumper to the frame rails?

I cant say how much the pintle can tow. I have not seen any Toyota official numbers for the 80 pintle location weight compacity. If you are going to tow 5000 lbs,
I recomend using a bolt on reciever hitch on road and take the hitch of when clearance is needed for off-road.
FZJ80 hitch $130.webp

The HQ bumper utilizes the 3 per side (6 total) factory captured nuts on the underside of the frame to mount the bumper. The same 6 bolts are used to bolt a reciever hitch to the 80. The hitch can come off and on without the bumper needing support.

Does anyone have the Hanna rear bumper without the side tube rails ? I really like the way the corners taper up but i dont care for the side rails. How about some pics ?

I was an idiot (again :D ) yesterday. One of the guys I wheeled with had his 35 under his 80. I could have snapped a picture and didn't. Very sorry.

We are currently working on a design change for the bumper without side tubes, stay tuned.
