Picked up the 40 today. Started driving it home, felt a clunk and then a LOT of play in the steering. Pulled over, popped the hood, and found a broken steering coupler

Fortunately I was on a street not the highway. Called Truckwerks and Jason came to rescue me... pulled it on to his trailer and it went back to the shop. Didn't think to take a pic but one of the pins in the joint just sheared off!

Looks like the 40 won't be going to the Toyota Trail Team event... damn!

The engine runs pretty good, though...

More later.

True. But why did it break in the first place? Never heard of this happening before.

My first guess, 36 years of wear, abuse, corrosion...... may have something to do with it?:D

Mark,
I think I might actually have one if you need it. We are talking about the splined female input to rag joint - pump, correct?

If so, I will go start to dig, can you post up a pic of the broken one?

All new parts (rag joint, steering shaft adapter)...

Maybe misalignment of steering shaft to box? Steering shaft too short?

No pics yet. It's the part that attaches to the steering box. Number 25 in this (not too great) pic:

Howdy! I'd side with Tools on this one: OLD AGE!!! Basically, they are just several layers of sidewall, bolted thru to make a flex joint. Better than steel u-joint as it reduces vibrations. John

Silly John, see post #6. :D

#25 it is sir, still new in box! If you want it, it is yours, I don't even remember what I traded or spent on it (knowing me, probably traded:grinpimp:).
I didn't use it when I redid the steering to a mopar box, chevy pump / high steer.

On a new part my guess would be, new defect, incorrectly made. They are pretty stout, so even if it was way misaligned, it would take some big arms to break it and you would have noticed that much bind right away. I would like to see it, may have to stop by Truckwerks.

Funny you should say that. When Jason and I were loading the 40 on the trailer, he saw the joint and said "Looks like I'm calling JT Outfitters...."

Just wanted to let you know, when I droped my daughter off this a.m. at Josh's house I hijacked the new joint coupler......so you will be able to make it to the event!!!!:beer::beer::bounce::bounce2:
