That's super clean. Good for you guys.

Glad to see everything has worked out and probably for the better. Looks like a great starting point as well.

So are you going to give us the before specs?

Its in pretty good shape in and out. The interior is well taken care of for its age and the body is 99% straight. Few little bits here and there that are going to get fixed. The hood and roof are faded and the paint is gone. Might take it to a shop down the road and see if they can match and repaint those so it looks a bit better.

Right now its has a hair over 250K miles on it. Engine runs smooth and the truck drives great. Probably going to do a little bit of work on the engine, but nothing major. Thats the only part that scared me, the high milage, but its a crawler anyways. It does drive nicely though! :D

From what research Ive done, its looks like the runner has a W56B 5 speed transmission, and a RF1A top shift gear driven transfer case. Both good units from what ive read. Axle code says 4.10 2 pinion diffs. Looks like the only trucks that came with 4 pinion diffs where the 22RTE turbo's.

So I figured first order of business is the solid front axle, suspension, and dual cases. Dual cases is something i need to do more homework on to see what all I need to do...

Oh, and I sat inside it yesterday invisioning a nice full length roll cage Im going to build. Plan is 4 bucket seats with 5 point harnesses.

Sounds like a solid rig. I'm not sure I would worry about the paint too much, it is a crawler project and that is money that could be spent somewhere else. Besides if you luck is anything like mine, the first trail I took it on, the hood would get damaged somehow.

You do have both of the better tranny and t-case. You can either use yours as the t-case or as the doubler. My opinion, would depend on what you find for a t-case. Just make sure you put the 4.7's in the rear case. Keep the 2.28's for the crawler box. You will find the low range options will cover most terrain. The later the better as far as bearing/gear design. Also, not that it's a huge deal with a 22re in front, but you might look into "turboeing" the cases as well, which means upgrading from the 21 spline to 23 spline shafts. I had the 23 spline in my 88, which Marlin recommends with the v6's and is what Toyota used in the Turbo trucks.

Regarding the diffs, I would find a v6 rear case for the rear. Much more re-enforcement on the housing and you are going to be ugrading the case anyway (at least I hope you are) so the 2 vs 4 pinion won't be that big of a deal because the ARB and detroits are 4 pinion in the v6 versions. Also, you can order a TRD e-locker from places like Marlin/Inchworm, with whatever gears (5.29's ahem) for pretty reasonable. For the front, FJ80 high pinion all the way. Helps prevent u-joint bind at the front u-joint with the passenger side drops way out and the d-line angles are better all the way around. Again, Marlin/Inchworm can put a front third together with 5.29's and the factory e-locker for pretty reasonable.

Front axle: I would buy ruffstuff's front axle in "IFS" width. Then all you need are either mini/60 series outers from the Trunions out, to bolt onto the new housing. You are going to be adding better birfs and they will make the inner axle length to whatever you need, so no real extra expense there.

Can you build it cheaper? Sure, but will you be as happy with the end result? I doubt it. Spend your money in the right places and you will have a very well built, long lasting truck that should put up with the abuse of rockcrawling very well and keep you from being THAT guy on the trail.

Looking forward to the build.

Jack
