does anyone know if a 3FE will pass smog in CA. with a RV cam?

I've heard of "RV cams" on American V8's where the engine is built for use by makers of Recreational Vehicles to help with low end torque in an application where different emissions standards were used for the RV industry. Some guys would buy these for their engines when they rebuilt them. But I've never heard of such a thing for a 3FE which was essentially built from the ground up to provide low end torque. Details??

He has posted this on a Toyota truck forum about his LC
I am guessing he would like to upgrade his cam while he has the head out?

davisdrafting posted on offroad.com said:
cracks in cyl. no. 2 3 & 5 from gasket surface to ex. valve.
and crack in water port hence water in oil.

My rendition what happened
first of all I bought the LC at auction so I know nothing about it.
I believe that the radiator or water pump went out hence new pump an radiator
the 3FE was over heated, causing center 2 3&5 (probably 4 need a magnaflux) to crack in the head leaving cyl. no. 1&6 in good shape.
Strange roughness in cyl. no. 2 3 &5 noticed, caused by running with cracks.
happing on ex. stroke reliving internal pressure by crack’s letting coolant
spray across exiting hot gasses vaporizing coolant and cleaning a portion
of the cyl. wall in a line directly across from crack causing pitting.

does this sound correct ?

Come on davisdrafting tell these guys the whole story, the more detail you give the better the anwsers.

WELCOME :flipoff2:

Correct you are my friend

just got back from the machine shop, not looking good,
the head may need to be replaced so if anyone knows where
I can find one, used.
block needs to be bored, that means new pistons/rings
cam is going flat, lifters are breaking down an warn
oh an the crank needs polishing.
I’ll find out the whole scoop Monday or Tuesday and re post.

Any help locating these parts new, accept head (used) at a bargain
price would greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you've got bigger problems than tracking down an "RV cam" that doesn't exist...Sorry you're going to have such a heavy bill. It's amazing that someone could so neglect their engine that even a stout boat anchor of an engine like this is damaged so badly. With all those problems, I'd say it's safe to assume that not much would be salvaged in that engine - why not simply find a used engine vs messing with a block repair and head repair. And if you think the block's OK then I suspect nobody's opened the bottom yet....
