I am a bit confused and have read all I can find about this, but here goes. I bought a 74 FJ40 with a blown motor. The deal included a 2F and a 4spd transmission. My mechanic, great guy just doesn't communicate well, tells me I need a new shifter for the transfer case because it is not working (figured out he means it is too short). The main problem is that I am deployed and can't just run over and take a look at what he means. Reading the posts I see entries about swapping the nose cones and doing several different things. My question is: Exactly what parts do I need to source to finish the swap. The old drivetrain was intact, just not in the FJ. The 4spd includes everything IN the case and the shifter, no bolt ons. Sorry to beat a dead horse, Neigh!

first of all if you're using a three speed case you'll need to change the input gear. The three speed input is ten spline and the 4 speed output is a 16 spline. There is an input gear available. It also requires a tailshaft bearing. I'm sure other vendors carry it but I have bought these pieces from man-a-fre so I know they carry it. E-mail al at
man-a-fre@sbcglobal.net. he can set you up or at least tell you everything you need

NCcruiser1970, you need to get your mechanic to join MUD! He can learn a lot.......;)

That's a great idea but who can I get to translate for him?

Need Xfer shift shaft, shifter, & linkage, too

In addition to the input gear and bearing mentioned by lcwizard, you'll need the longer shift shaft from a "4-speed" case (#17 in the pic below), as well as the shifter (#2), guide (#3), and linkage (everything else).
