The transmission is back on the engine and it is time to get the parking brake on. It worked fine so we didn't pay much attention yet. But now we want to put it on we took a close look and found some issues.

  • The cable is bad: shortened, modified and damaged. So we need a new cable. Will a later cable fit? The old cable is not adjustable. IIRC later cables are and have an other mounting plate at the firewall. We have a cable shop in town, they can make a new cable. But it is not adjustable so it will be difficult to determine the exact length. How did you deal with this?
  • The brake shoes are bended and modified. Don't know why. Will newer brakeshoes fit? Are those still available?

Don't think the later ones were adjustable. Think the adjustment was inside the parking brake. Never compared the two or even part numbers. I think the mid 73 style was used all the way thru the ones mounted to the split transfer case. Spline on the drum changed and stud size/bolt pattern but the rest was the same.

I can get measurements on later shoes of needed. They are handy. Don't really want to pull Annie apart to compare though

Thanks. I was able to order brakeshoes with the partnr out of my '65 partsbook. (46550-35010). Ordered at my forklift parts supplier, so probably also used in forklifts. Should be correct.

Yet I have to find the cable. The adjustable cable is probably newer (>73?). Found out the part I need is 46410-60020. Partsbook says length = 1676

According to this website, https://www.partsvoice.com, these dealers have the cable.

(On edit, it appears that my copy and paste job did not result in usable links. To view the contact information of the dealers just go to the partsvoice Website and type in the part number.)

Not sure when the change was. My Feb 73 still ran the same way as the early version. My Oct 75 ran the new way thru the floor by the gas pedal and was a longer four speed. Just look at my 61 FJ40 transmission transfer case. I remember now when I went to pull the rear driveline to tow it back from Washington State are remove the four bolts of the diff the driveline and drum brake just slid off. No nut was installed on tail shaft. just have to love POs. It does look like the newer ones inside and has the hex head on the back to adjust it. Don't remember any adjustments on a cable other than my 79 with a handle on the floor. The end of the that one by the handle is threaded to adjust it.

sor lists 58- 7/70 as being early style. length could be part of it, but i'm guessing this is the main issue...early has a small plate at firewall with small horizontal bolt pattern, later was a larger bucket type bracket with iirc, vertical large pattern bolt pattern. this large bucket looking bracket is where the firewall adjust ment was. these pics might help. first is early on annie, second is early cable robbed from inet, third is 70s cable robbed from inet and last is toy pic of later setup

Just got an answer from the dealer that the original partnr is still available. Ordered that and will be here in a week. Was a bit surprised but happy.

I also have an example of that last picture of a 73 fj40. That is the adjustable one I mentioned.

Thank you for clearing that up. It appears that 1/75 date was the change to the new routing thru the floor. So then was the 7/70 the date the cable from the carburetor changed to the thread end at the carburetor? Would make sense that is also the date the booster for the brakes started. Guess I should start working on my 73 one of these days. July I will have owned twenty years and I have yet to start it.:bang:

Found a picture of my the cable on 73. Still trying to figure out why it has a antenna and the factory blank plate in the radio hole.:hmm:

The new cable arrived. Now we have to find some time to get the brake assembled. Quite busy with work right now. Anyway, the cable is available oem:

Parking brake is put together and works. Point of attention: there has been a modification on the brake shoes in the early years. The plate in the newer shoes is thicker. That newer shoes don't fit the early adjuster. Also the shafts of the levers on the shoes are slightly shorter. Luckily we had a newer assembly lying around of which we could use those parts.

After putting it all together we did a very little test drive. The engine spins even better with some new oil in it. Not a single hesitation. Also the fixed transmission with all the new bearings goes without any noise :). Even without the transmission hump mounted. It got better then expected.

With all the new seals of the tranny and tc and the oil pan gasket and rear crankshaft seal we also got rid of the oil leaks. Will post a pic soon.

Next is having the seats done.
