Hello all, I've got a 94 LC that I bought about a month ago and got the crazy idea to paint it myself.

I was going to do a color change but after starting to tear the LC down I realized how much more work that would be and that it would also bug me that I would have the factory color in some areas under the hood and interior that I just couldn't get rid of. I've got the emerald green so I'm going to stick with it.

My question is, I'm just painting the outside, but what should I do with the seams around the doors? Should I tape them off so no paint bleeds in between? I'm not planning to paint anything inside, so I would prefer to not have to tape off the entire inside to paint the door jams.

I was told by the paint shop to tape off the inside and paint up to the first bend in the door but is that necessary? My main concern is I don't wan there to be a durability issue with the paint. It seems that all the other panel gaps will just have the paint on the end of the panel and won't be wrapped around, so I should do the same with the doors?

The other issue i'm trying to figure out is the rear hatch. Should I remove the lower and paint it off the car since it is overlapped by the upper, or can I spray the bottom then lower the top over the bottom and then spray the top?

Hope that all makes sense. Thanks in advance.

You will prob want to tape the door jambs because the overspray will getin there and look like a hack job when you open your doors. buy the small width tape and it really isnt a big deal to run all your doors and hatch, makes for a nicer job. To do the hatch right you need to paint lower seperate then after drying tape it like the other doors, then close the top and paint it all together. BUT since you are using same color and depending what quality job you want, you can prob just tape it for overspray then close top and paint it all together.

Thanks for the tips. I was planning to pull the lower gate and paint it seperately at the same time I'm painting everything else. I've got to paint the flares, mirrors, door handles seperately also. I was going to tape off the lower section of the back hatch area while I had it off. It's a lot of work but I can't see any other way of doing it cleanly.
