I have my 40 in a 1000 bits and now starting the rebuild. I want to tidy up the spings by removing the rusty look and coating them with a durable paint. One of the spring refurbish companies I spoke to said they use a basic water based paint to coat the springs which I guess would last 5 minutes.
Has anyone else refurbished their springs and what did they use for the coating?

I've done 2 sets with POR15 silver and a matt black top coat, the first set I painted the complete spring packs without pulling them apart and I always ended up with rust leaching out from between the leaves and they have never really looked very good, the second set I pulled them apart and painted the leaves individually and reassembled them with moly grease between the leaves and they have always looked pretty good, there was a bit of excess grease leaching out for a while but they settled down in the end

Has anyone had them powder coated? I know this is a more extreme measure, but it will outlast pretty much anything out there.

Springs flex. I don't think Powder coat would like that.

I'm a big believer in easy touch-up.

This is cheap and very durable:

THIS also works well:

If you want the springs to work well, a graphite paint like 'Slip plate' would be a good choice. Better spring action and no squeaking.

If you disassemble your spring packs then something like a graphite spray is good, but if you're just painting the pack, then it really doesn't matter what you use. I used plain old Krylon satin black about 6 years ago on my 1st 60 spring packs and it still looks fine, but I'm in So. Cal and El Niño got stopped at the border. :p

hiya, I did the por-15 on the outside and the graphite paint between the springs five years ago. It still looks pretty good albeit pretty dirty.

I read a good post said only way to keep the nice is to paint them and never drive it again.

I think even por 15 is to brittle for springs. Eastwood has a heavy duty antirust spray comes in a can or spray can and has a black option. It is basically a wax oil mixture, stays flexible.

I have had great success using it on springs, probably need to re coat every few years.
