I don't mean to be too :hillbilly: but has anyone considered painting their headliner? mine is kinda old and grungy looking and cleaning can only do so much. replacement is expensive, plus my top has never been separated so i don't think I want to fight with it. I was wondering if some rolled-on paint might help things out. comments?

You could try it and let us know... ;) Maybe a very heavy textured like the ones used in GM & Ford trunks in the '60s? Look at Eastwood for some options.

I'd thought about tinting RhinoLiner in Cyngnus White and having it sprayed as the headliner, but then decided the cost and weight (up high along with my roof rack) would be prohibitive. Also, if I didn't like it I'd be stuck with it.

You could paint it, but you'd have to seriously prep and smooth the fiberglass if you don't use a textured paint. I've just finished prepping my roof cap by removing all the dead foam and glue then smoothing out only the rough spots (using body filler) in the fiberglass to ensure the new headliner goes on perfect.

Only advice I can give is to take it to an auto interior shop. They can install the factory headliner material (from SOR or CCOT) properly or you can pick from 100's of other headliner material options. You can try and install it yourself, but you simply can't get spray can glue to work as well or last as long as glue applied via a glue gun with an air compressor.s

Also, I've got a lightly used SOR headliner I'd sell you for cheap. Prior owner tried to install one himself with spray can glue and didn't spray it right. Could be reused and look almost new...

They sell paint for headliner material. Yep, you can paint it. If you can't find headliner paint, get some vinyl paint for seats or upholstery and that will work. If the material is rotted it won't help anything but the color.

Good luck

You can go to sewing and cloth stores and buy headliner material for cheap. Get a can of spray adhesive and go nuts. It'll certainly look better than rolled on paint. Prolly cost you $30?

this has nothing to do with painting the headliner, but for $20 i bought some outdoor carpet from lowes and used on old can of spray adhesive we had laying around the shop. i doesn't have to be expensive.

I installed Cote-L Durabak which is similar to Rhino liner but you can brush or roll it on. I scraped off the old rotted headliner and rolled on a gallon of white Cote-L. 5 years later, it still looks great. Cote-L was about $100 a gallon back then.

I actually did that 7 years ago when I first restifyed my BJ42. Worked pretty good, (used upolstry paint from the local hardware store) looked like new until I started wheeling it hard, getting mud spray up there and not bothering to clean it off. Definately a cheap and easy way to make the headliner look clean as long as (like the others say) it is in good shape otherwise.
Cheers,

That is my plan as well...

I think it will cover more imperfections than paint.
