About to get some rust grinded out and an overall paint job done to the entire body of my FJ60. Curious as to what pricing I should be looking for on a quality paint job? Also, my cruiser is dark copper(#474) right now, but was thinking about making the top half the classic white(sort of an homage to the FJ55). Not sure. Thoughts and suggestions welcome....

Think it really matters where you are but I have heard from $1200-2000. Most of the body shops will not give you a ballpark on the phone and want you to drive down. I would just drive it to a few shops and get some estimates. I would leave it all one color since it is cheapier and looks better I think.

Maybe Cdan or other guys on this list could refer you to someone in the area.

I got a quality paint job (strip down to bare metal, metal etch primer, skim coat dents, and the best quality Sherwin Williams two stage paint, and buff), back in November 2004 for $3200. This included painting the hood and tailgate on both sides. The materials alone cost $1000, and I got an excellent price on the job because the shop needed work between insurance jobs. The silver FJ60 in CCOTs paint code section is my truck. I also took out all the glass, and all trim, which helped cut my cost. No rust repair was involved.

I'd say a quality paint job using good materials is going to set you back at least 3K now. If you want a cheap job, go to MAACO. Even then, it'll run $700-$1000, and body work will be extra. And MAACO probably won't cut out and fix rust properly.

$3-4K for a quality paint job that will last. $500 for a crap job with overspray that will start peeling in a year. There really isn't anything in between.

I know the price sounds high but I just painted my truck myself and after doing all the prepping, sanding, primering, sanding, painting, sanding and buffing I have to say at even $4K it's a deal! The prepping, painting and buffing took three solid weeks. Of course I had no idea what I was doing so it was probably more work than it should have been, but even a pro will spend 80-100 hours on a quality job.

Well since you asked..... DON'T DO IT.... paint the upper half white that is.
IMO, there just isn't really a good body line on the '60 to use as a natural transition between the two. It will look goofy and contrived.

Pick an interesting "custom" color, paint the whole rig, and now you're talking....

My 2¢,
