I came across this tread a while ago and thought I'd give it a try with a roller. I think it worked great. Since I'm working in my basement, I have to be careful not to "nuke" the house with fumes and dust. Using the roller, it was minimal. I have three coats on the rear quarters, with a 400 grit and 600 grit wet-sand between coats. (24 hours apart). Still have a couple more coats to put on the cowl, dash, and floor boards, but you get the idea. Color is Rustoleum "Smoke Gray". I have use about a quart so far, and three 12 oz spray cans to cut in the difficult areas.

What do you think?

It looks good. Are you going to clear coat it?? Did you paint the bottom side as well?

It looks like you are passing me on the cruiser build. I still need to strip mine down and take the tub off to paint it and cleaned and paint the frame. I might have to make GSMTR this year if you are going to have it ready.

Bottom is painted as well. I pre-painted some of the rear pans before final assembly/welding and just touched them up. With the tub just sitting on the frame I lifted one side 8" or so and did the front half then did the other front half the next day.

No clear. I'm not after that good a finish. If I wanted to, I could keep wetsanding and then buff, but I have to draw the line. I'm on a schedule! You get a ton of paint applied when using the roller. It tends to self-level and flow into a nice glossy finish. Besides, clear would complicate trail damage repair.

Yeah, it does look a bit like a Navy ship. I hope once I get the bezel, seats, cage and stuff in it looks a bit less bland. I really wanted to go back to the factory blue, but it is a tough color to get right and I didn't see '77 Smurf Blue on the shelf at Lowes for $7.57 a quart.

I'm open to suggestions for bezel (white or black) and cage colors. Seats are black cloth Corbeaus. Was leaning toward just a black cage, but I'd think about something else.

I like a black bezel on the gray.

the 40 is looking good. I have been out of the BBRC loop for while but I do read the thread from time to time.
I have some strange issues going on with the 80. A while back it was overheating while towing materials and equipment up and down the beach in Corolla. I flushed radiator and replaced the water pump and clutch fan . The rig returned to normal, able to tow and work hard while temp gauge stayed on normal. :)
Recently it has came back but is worst than before. while towing a small load on the highway (about 3000 lbs) the temp gauge would go up while traveling uphill and would cool back down while travelling down hill. This is small towing job compared to hauling the 40's around.:confused: I replaced the thermostat but nothing changed.

I know you do your homework and have talked to others about the Infamous Head Issue. Does this sound like it? I have not added any fluid but do occasionally smell antifreeze. The 80 has run flawless. What are your thoughs ?
By the way? Are you going to take your 40 to GSMTR 2007. Cam says the BBRC club is going this year, I am planning ahead so I can get off from work.

Hey Fred - Good to hear from you.

Yes, I'm aiming for GSMTR, May14-19. I have a lot to do before then, but I'm getting there. I think John E. will have a scheduling conflict with SOL testing at the school, but some of the other BBRC members are talking about going.

Sorry to hear about the 80. That is a bad feeling. At least you aren't loosing coolant - it might be something simpler. I'd do a search on "fan clutch" and make sure yours is operating correctly. I know you swapped it once, but others have had issues with them as well - even the new ones. It might be the easy fix to keep you on the road. Just keep an eye on that coolant level. They say the factory temp gauge is worthless and if it reads warm you are really hot. (There is a mod to adjust it's sensitivity).

There is a ton of tech in the 80 section about overheating FZJs. Some feel that it is just a matter of time with a stock headgasket. Toyota has done many design changes to the gasket since '97 to improve it. Mine technically never blew, but my water pump did and I lost all coolant, overheating the engine and warping the head 0.017". (I have the old head still if you want it!)
