What's everyone's favorite primer for prepping their Landcruiser for paint? I'd also like to know some good rust killers.

I think it would depend a lot on what kind of paint job you are doing. If its a trail rig its going to get a much cheaper primer than a full 100 point restoration. I used cheap implement primer (van sickle) on my pig and it turned out ok.

it depends on the paint you want to use. No easy answer unless you give us that piece of info

We are planning on a decent resto, so the paint needs to look pretty good. However we're gonna be driving it a lot still so we'll need a durable paint finish.

You basically want to select a paint system for what you want to achieve - primer, paint, etc. Typically a paint will say what primers you want to use, topcoats to use, etc. Otherwise, you can get incompatibility problems between the different layers.

A paint job is in my future too and after a bunch of reading I'm planning on going with a good epoxy primer (look at Southern Polyurethanes' website) and a fleet-grade single stage (no clear coat) urethane topcoat.

Should have good durability a look "right."

Thanks, I'll check out that brand of paint.

If you sand or grind down to metal you need to use an etching primer or you're going to subjected to potential rust. After you etch prime you can use a standard primer. Also make certain you get a steel etch primer, not one specifically for aluminum. I prefer base coat clear coat, it's easier to repair scratches and the finish is second to none. Good luck.

x2 on Southern Polyurethanes. I'm currently using their epoxy primer and clears for my project. Probably the best customer service you can get with any paint product, they offer 7 day a week customer service. This has been very helpful with my project. There's debate over whether epoxy or etch is better over bare metal, there's pros and cons, search around and come up with your own conclusion.
