Has anyone seen this before?

Have a solution besides re-spraying the hood/roof? It only appears on the horizontal surfaces of the vehicle. Must be in the clear coat as there is no apparent rust.

Thanks for your input.

Interesting, i have no idea. Don't think Ive seen anything like that before. Start by polishing. Might as well use a heavy grit, because if it doesn't come out, it will have to be sanded anyway before paint.

Thanks, that's a good thought considering the local auto body shop quoted $600 to sand and paint just the hood. $1000-$1200 to blend into the fenders since it's metallic paint.

It's a 2000 LX-470 for reference and has always been parked in a garage. I've never seen anything like it either.

I would just keep taking it to different paint shops to get more quotes; maybe you will come across someone who can cut into that clear coat just the right amount to get it out without sand/paint work.

Edit: as a matter of fact, I know that right up through at least 97, the white on the LCs and LXs used an enamel paint, no clear coat; not sure about the other colors. Are we sure that paint has a clear coat on it?

Yes, it's a base/clear system.

I can't tell from the picture...is it really that blotchy? The clear coat on my hood isn't in the greatest shape but it just appears very dull across the entire hood, not splotchy/blotchy or whatever you want to call what you see there!

Almost appears chemical. To be clear, this is an LX-470 I am/was considering purchasing.

The seller is discounting the price significantly to cover the paint issue in addition to needing brakes, tires, AC line fix, etc.

I have this on mine. Smoky Topaz as well. Just the top roof. On rainy day, the paint darkens to almost "new". But then when dry, it fades back.

Have a professional detailer give it a good polish. It may just be oxidation in the clear coat layer. Hopefully!

I have had the same issue on our Infiniti G35 that we bought used. Turns out it was the result of cheap / subpar body work. We ended up having it painted by a quality body shop and it looks like new. Make sure the body shop has been in business for 10+ years and will give a proper guarantee on their work. My shop guarantees the work for as long as I own the vehicle.

If those areas are going out - the rest of the paint will likely follow - particularly the tops of the door handles and tops of the side mirrors. If they don't show any damage yet, you may extend their "life" by having them clear coated without doing the base paint (give them another layer of clear), when you have the hood and roof repainted. - or, just have the whole truck repainted if you want it all to match exactly. In a way it depends on what you are looking for aesthetically - perfect body, or well used truck with "character and a good personality".

I doubt you will be able to buff them out without going into the paint.
Are you certain it was in the garage most of its life? Because this is certainly sun damage (since it is all pointed up). too bad it wasn't waxed regularly - would save a bunch of trouble- but then I guess your price would be higher.

(BTW - 1200 for hood and roof sounds about right to me.)
