Overdrive problem - need advice/suggestions... (1 Viewer)

Well, I have a problem that started occurning a couple of days ago on my 94 TLC.
As I'm driving along on the highway, the overdrive light on the dash starts flashing on/off intermitently. (interestingly, when flashing on, the light isn't as bright as when I manually push the overdrive button in to turn it off).
Anyway, aftersome fooling around with it, both while driving on highway and stopped, I notice that it falshes on/off with the right turn signal engaged as well as with the hazard ligths on. (as the turn signal/hazards flashes, so does the OD light) (something like this - )
When the OD light flashes on/off, it's actually engaging/disengaging the overdrive as well, so it's not just a dash light problem.

I hope I've explained the problem well enough for you guys to understand.
If I haven't, let me know and I'll try to explain it better.
Any suggestions on what this problem might be???

possibly a poor ground shared by those switches? Maybe in the console area or driver's kick panel?

I would also guess that you have a bad ground problem. Electricity always has to have a good ground and will back feed through other systems looking for it. That in turn can cause some pretty freaky things to occur. I had a bad ground in my lighting system one time that made some pretty bizarre thing happen with the lights. Fixed it and everything works normally now. Good luck.

When the OD light flashes on/off, it's actually engaging/disengaging the overdrive as well, so it's not just a dash light problem.

This part of your observation is interesting...as I cannot imagine the OD is actually controlled why wether or not the light on the dash is on or off.


I would guess that this on/off control is sent from the switch on the shifter. Have you checked for loose connection in the shifter?

Did it just start? Been doing it for a while? Does it ALWAYS flash when the right turn signal is on?

By manually wiggleing the thumb switch are you able to recreate the issue?

hey guys, thanks for the feedback. I believe too that it is an electrical short somewhere. Where is the question.
TX_TLC - I've checked for loose connections on the shifter. This problem just started to occur over the past few days. It doesn't ALWAYS flash with the right turn signal on. For example, I just got home from a 15 minute drive and NO PROBLEM!
Could my tranny be overheating and causing the temp quage inside the tranny to malfunction? (just a guess)
Also, I hae not been able to recreate the issue so far. If i could do that, I could probably narrow down the problem. But I'm not even able to do that yet.

Unlikely. You have a transmission temp sensor that will trip a dash light.
