The ambient air temp sensor sits in front of the engine. If it has enough air flow in front of it mine is pretty accurate...again within a couple degrees either way. But on slower trail climbs, where I notice it the most, the heat from the engine pushes enough heat forward to skew the reading...sometimes 20 degrees or more higher.

Another practical use for the snorkel: A buddy of mine relocated his ambient air temp sensor to the inside of the snorkel; however its not worth the trouble for me...surprised? Yeah...me too.

I noticed the temp changes from the engine startup compared to driving 5 mins or so. This is especially true if parked in the sun on asphalt. Probably an obvious point to most here, but that's how I got a 122F reading.

Bottom line, the most accurate temp is given when cruising down the hwy.

I don't think the unit was ever intended for critical temp measurements. Back in the old days we just stuck our head out the window and it was either hot or cold.
How much more info do you really need?

If you ever feel the need for truly accurate temp measurements you would want to use a thermocouple or IR sensor. I can see where an IR sensor that read the true pavement temp might be useful in cold climates. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between black ice and just wet.

it also will be less accurate sitting still than moving especially in Summer....as radiant temps are sensed from steel bumpers etc.......it is a good reference even if off a couple degrees.
