I'm excited to share the culmination of our ongoing project: a custom fitout for our 1996 Toyota 80 Series VX Limited, designed for long-term travel and off-road adventures. After months of planning , we’ve completed the build, and I wanted to give you all a detailed look into what we’ve done, along with insights from our latest YouTube video showcasing the final result.

Toyota 80 Series Build

Why a Custom Fitout?
Since we're gearing up for extended travels—potentially living out of the 80 Series for months or even years—we knew we needed a setup that was both functional and tailored to our needs. We wanted features like:

  • Air Pressure Systems: To manage tire pressures on the go.
  • Fast-Charging USB and 240V Outlets: For all our devices.
  • Hot Water System: Essential for a warm shower after a day of adventure.
  • Fridge with a Full Kitchen Slide: To keep our food fresh, similar to what you’d find on the back of a ute.
  • Outdoor Shower: To rinse off after those beach days or dusty trails, complete with a water mixer for the perfect temperature.
Finding the Right Partners
Initially, we approached well-known brands, but surprisingly, none were willing to take on a project of this scale for a wagon. Luckily, we discovered Outback Touring Solutions on the Sunshine Coast. Their team was fantastic, listening to our ideas and offering suggestions that improved our plans. Thanks to their advanced 3D modeling technology, we’re maximizing every inch of space in the back of our 80 Series.

The Final Build
In our YouTube video, we walk you through the key components of our fitout:

  • Clearing Out the Old Setup: We removed the factory travel fitout, which was nice but not practical for our plans.
  • Gulwings Installation: We added gulwing doors from the Landcruiser Company. They looked promising, but we had high expectations!
  • Tailgate Storage Solution: We opted for the Hurican tailgate storage, which we’re thrilled with so far—it’s perfect for smaller items like hoses and blankets.
  • Kitchen Setup: Here’s where things get interesting! We planned for a kitchen slide, but fitting everything in one slide while retaining the rear seats was a challenge. Craig from Outback Touring Solutions suggested a two-burner induction cooktop instead of gas, which has turned out to be a fantastic compromise.
  • Hot Water System: We installed a 12V, 10-liter water heater behind our storage drawer. It heats water to 47 degrees in just 10 minutes—perfect for those beach days!
  • Outdoor Shower: Our setup includes a convenient outdoor shower with a 12V pump, allowing us to rinse off quickly after a day of exploring. Two buttons make it easy to operate from the rooftop tent, so we can enjoy a hot shower without hassle.
  • Power Management: To run all our gear, we went for a 300 Ampere LiFePO4 battery, managed by a Redarc Manager 30 with a Redvision Display. This allows us to monitor our power usage easily.
  • Storage Drawer and Table: We designed a storage drawer that also includes a foldable table, making it easy to work on the road.
  • User-Friendly Controls: We kept the control system simple, minimizing the number of buttons while ensuring we have everything we need at our fingertips.

What’s Next?
But that's not all! We’re also excited about upcoming upgrades that will enhance our off-road capabilities, including:

  • A 3-inch engineered lift kit from Superior Engineering to tackle tougher terrains.
  • A custom bullbar, rear bar, rock sliders, and brush rails from Punchy Fabrication to provide better protection and functionality.
  • A rooftop tent (RRT) and awning from Outback Tourer for comfortable camping and shade when we need it.

We’re eager to take our newly outfitted 80 Series on some epic adventures! If you want to follow along with our journey and get more detailed insights, check out our YouTube video. We’re looking forward to sharing our experiences and connecting with fellow 80 Series lovers!
