Yes, it's another trailer build but one I'm excited about. For some of you that visit ExPo this trailer may look familiar, it's the twin to my friend Tom's (FJJUNKY) M416 trailer. We've been working on these trailers since late December/early January. This trailer will see multiple use but it's real duty will be for camping.

Anyhow, here's some pics of what it's looking like at this stage...

The tongue was extended a total of 28" to help make room for a cargo/battery box on the nose. The drop down on the tongue was done this way for a few reasons, first, with the pintle hitch and the lunette on the trailer being adjustable we can tow this behind my FJ with a 6" lift, my wife's FJ with a 3" lift and any other vehicle that we may use. This will give us enough options so that whatever we're towing behind the trailer will stay nice and level.

To see a larger picture just click on whichever pic you want to see.

We extended the 4" wide by 1/4" thick plate steel across the full length of the 2" x 4" x 1/4" thick bumper so we could weld these tail light brackets on...

The tailgate and supports started off with 2" x 2" post being welded to the 4" plate of steel that was welded to the back of the tub and then bolted to the bumper. On the drivers side post there is a gusset to help support the weight of the tail gate, you would not believe how sturdy all of this is. We made hinges out if 1/2" round stock and welded one side into some 1/2" interior diameter tubing for strong but cheap hinges. The tailgate is framed out of 1-1/4" square tubing and skinned with 18ga. steel. It will be latched from the inside (not shown) with a simple and cheap sliding gate latch.

Other pics...

There's still a lot to do...fab the lid, grind, grind, grind, grind off the fender tabs and relocate about 3" lower, strip all the surface rust and get it ready to primer, spray the inside of the tub with Rhino-liner, wire it with a 7 pin connector (for battery, lights, LED lights underneath the lid, etc. etc. etc. Hope to have it all done by the end of March to kick off the camping season. Will have more pics to post once we do a little more.

Thanks for looking, let me know what you think!

Jim

PS. I want to thank Tom, his dad terry for all their help and of course my wife for putting up with all the trailer talk and bills.

Question for you guys...I saw a mobile city traffic sign that they had tongue jacks on all 4 corners to lift it off the ground (and avoid someone stealing it) was thinking of using 3 tongue jacks (front/center and then left/right side of rear bumper) to level and stabilize our trailer once we're camped and inside the RTT. On the rear bumper I was thinking of using the weld on rings with removable jacks while we're traveling. Once camped, pin on the jacks and crank away. These wouldn't really be used to lift the entire trailer off the ground but more for stability, Pro's... cons?

Jim, I think those would work fine. As far as lifting the trailer I'm sure they wouldn't have any problems. We have them on our light towers that are over 2000lbs and they get jacked up at 3 points with the tires off the ground when in use. The only problem I see would be having to mount and dismount them and even then that's not a real big issue.

Thanks Kilo, appreciate it. Now I just have to figure out which one's to use!

Actually it was your design that starting me thinking about the idea and once I saw the same basic design on the traffic signs I decided it's what I wanted to do. That's what I really like about this site....sharing (or stealing :D) ideas with one another! Thanks guys.

Well, I finally got time between school and work to get some more work done. The lid is finally together, I say finally because the company I used was a total joke, the lid was a 2 piece that I would weld together. Well, they never measured the angled bends with the end plates so they didn't match up, anyways, after about 4-5 weeks and multiple issues, it's finally together.

Here's a pic of what I'm using for a rear stabilizer, it plugs into the 2" hitch receiver and has a 1" threaded bar that can raise or lower pretty easily. Once at camp, I'll lower the tongue jack, adjust this to just touch the ground and then raise the tongue to apply pressure and help stabilize the trailer...it works perfectly!!

Here it is all ready to go, just a little grinding to do, drill the holes for the RTT and tear down for final paint. Should be done in time for our Memorial Day camping trip!!!

Thanks guys, the trailer is pretty much done now and we've used a few times to work out any issues but nothing really came up. I'll post pics of the finished product in the next few days.

sdking35...just sent you an email.

Well here's a few pics from our last vacation in Mammoth Lakes, I only have a few pics of the trailer on this trip but will hopefully find the memory card with all the others  and post those up later. Everything works perfectly and the only changes I'll be doing in the near future is the tongue box and a better paint job.

Jim,
It looks sharp and comfy, if I can combine such extreme descriptors. I'm looking forward to the day when we get a lid and RTT.

Excellent looking setup. The swing out tail gate is a great idea.

nice set up. is the cable lock to secure the lid when not campin?

and 2x4 make very poor wheel chocks on any sort of incline, or in mud. just saying: I drove over a 5" wheelchock in mud last month, hardly noticed it was there.

The cable lock is actually for our bikes that didn't make the trip but I forgot to take it out of the trailer. Used it to lock up the wheels instead. Both the lid and the tub have tabs that line up, they both have a hole drilled through them which a pad lock slides through and keeps the lid locked. You can see them in this pic just above the tail lights.

The 2x4's are just a temp solution, I'm making a set that will be ramp style and tethered together.
