Started looking at the ambulance doors that go with the big top. They are in pretty good shape with the exception of this rusty bottom edge. I'll start patching that up with sheet metal.

Can anyone say SETBACK? I drove my rig to work yesterday (because several of my other cars are in need of repair) and I noticed my fluid was running out of the overflow tube. It only did it when running on the highway. I got it home after work and looked at the overflow tank and saw it all foamed up. My guess is a blown head gasket forcing exhaust bubbles into the coolant. how big is a head gasket replacement? :-(
Don't you get oil and coolant mixed with a blown head gasket?

Well, I started into the engine. Bought a manual online and started following each step of the cylinder head removal. Removed the fuel lines, intake manifold, exhaust manifold and cooling setup. I will back out the bolts to the head tonight (in the pattern suggested). Having never worked on a diesel, I've noticed that there is a dirt residue inside the valve cover. Is that normal?

I was afraid someone was going to ask about compression testing. I didn't do it. So now I don't have a specific cylinder that I am looking at. I did take the head off on the pattern suggested in the Toyota manual. Since I have not done a diesel before, I don't want to do anything on assumptions. To lift the head I just tied it up to a 4x4 beam and lifted it off with my son. Inspecting the block, I could not find any obvious failures, but did find cracks in the fuel injector ports. I don't know if that is an issue or not since it appears to be contained within the gasket ring. I'll show photos of it tomorrow.

CRACKED HEAD! Not sure what my best plan of action is right now. Ugg. At least its not a family member with a cracked head, just an engine.

Found another head and had it shipped out to me. So far it looks OK. I'm having some valve work done on it. Still working on the gaskets. Got 8 replacement bolts. Most of the head bolts looked fine but 8 of them look like they have gone through some heavy corrosion.

Fast Eddy, no. Those are the ones I replaced. The rest were in fine condition. To make a long story short, I found a used head and it also had 2 cracks in it. The seller refunded my money but I still lost in shipping. I wound up forking out the big bucks and got a brand spanking new head. I had the valves ground down and started putting it back together this weekend (3 months later). I chased the threads, wire wheeled the bolts, replaced 8 bolts, read the manual over and over. I plan on taking then next week in small increments of time to put it back together. The head is on with 83 ft-lbs on each bolt. Next weekend, I will do the valve clearances with a friend who is an experienced mechanic who is also a neighbor.

Yea!!!!!!!! Woot Woo! I put the 2H back together and got it running again. It took a while but its together. I ran it for 10-15 minutes twice and took it down the street but not far. I still want to make sure the thermostat and circulation is going correctly. The top hose did not heat up after 10 minutes like I thought it would. I think I just need to run it longer or actually drive it. I am just being paranoid I guess. I've never taken an engine apart and put it back together, so its a big deal to me. I read the manual multiple times along the way and asked for advise as well. After putting it back together, I just left the injectors loose and cranked it over a bunch of times until I saw some diesel finally come out. Then I tightened up the injectors and fired it up. It was rough for about 10 seconds and then ran smooth after that. It started right up each time after that. The only thing I think I need to do is burp the engine (get rid of any coolant air pockets). I still have to look that up.
