94 80 series front axle shaft. It was leaking so I dug in. I have the terrain tamer seal kit. Does the groove look bad enough I need to replace the shaft? I`ve been told to use the trail gear seals (not gonna happen) or try to install the OEM seals in a slightly different location away from the groove or replace the shaft. Passenger side isn`t leaking but I`m only assuming it looks similar but I haven`t dug into that side yet.

Kenny, I'm not sure, but I'm super interested in which way you go. I'm probably doing this next spring or sooner if need be.

It looks polished still, meaning no pits or cuts. I would seat the oem seal short (leave it out some) and run with it. I have put some fipg in the seal seat, none on front edge then put the seal in, short of fully set. Not sure if this is needed, but makes me feel better.

fipg?

Mine was that bad, maybe worse when I resealed it. I seated the seal shallow and have had no issues. I even pulled the shaft back out to swap a birf and I still don't show any leaking.

form in place gasket -- think silicone sealant -- permatex grey equiv. Toyota calls it fipg.
