HEre are a few pics of the build we (Bengels Offroad, and I) did on mine. Since I rolled the truck, I had a different approach as was fortunate enough to find a replacement top piece with front glass. The first few pics are the initial cut of the roof etc. leading up to the last pic which is post new top surgical installation. Since the picture I have cut off the remainder of the roof sheet metal and I'm in the process of adding lexan roofing painted CAMO. Cheers!

Nay, don't you love how 80's are following the same trends XJ's did a few years ago? :D

They might as well be since a lot of the people who own FJ80s act like Jeep owners. Did somebody actually reference usable cargo space!??!!!! You gotta be kidding me. I thought this was a four wheel drive site. And was there ever a time you could sell a seriously modded and seasoned trail rig and get anything for it? If you are looking at your rig as an investment, you should be right here on the computer hating people because they have a lot more fun than you and do what you are afraid to do with your rig. Barricade yourselves in your homes looking for pennies in the couch, because you might scratch your rig if you drive it.

You missed the point of that comment - it's that people are finally getting way out of the box and taking out the sawzall.

This forum is still hung up on which OME lift is best, it's a small few who are pushing the envelop and proving where you can take these rigs.

Much as I once heard you needed 6" of lift to run 32" tires on an XJ we used to hear you needed 5" of lift to run 35's. These "guidelines" always get blown out of the water, it's been slow to come here, but that's one thing you'll get with market values plummeting: guys saying "**** it" and rolling with their plans.

My only point was that if you are going to do it, at least make it cool :flipoff2:

cause you all the time tryin' to catch me ridin' dirty.... who is that in the back? Why it's Bill Riiiiiiiley

Would you classify that turd as a "sinker" or a "floater" ?

Funniest part, besides the carpet, is that that was the last time anyone was caught smiling that day:D

That is what the bed is useful for. When you get stuck in a mudhole, your buddy can walk on your roof, jump in the bed and attach the tow strap.

This is what I want to do except cover the bed area.
1) take 7" off the back
2) move the top hatch as far forward as practical behind rear seats
3) cover "bed" area
4) cut the bottom off the rear quarter panel

Like this
fj80_plan.jpg

Goals:
1) better departure angle
2) less bumping the top back 1/4 panel on trees
3) fit 37" flat in the back
4) maintain seating for 4 with recovery gear & tools out of cabin area
5) fold seats forward to excursions

2) less bangin

I vote for the 4 door with the short bed.

I wish I had the fabbing skills and the balls to hack up my truck.

well i may not have the fabbing skills, but i have the balls. look out for another chopped 80 in the next few weeks. i have shop time finally scheduled the first of july for chopping the roof off, then a bob in a few weeks after that. its still my daily driver so i cant waste any time once i start cutting.
