Hi there, I am thinking of selling my '89 HJ61 and buying a newer Tundra. I'm thinking of this for practical reasons as I need a pick-up. A reason I'm hesitant is because I like the turbo diesel that I currently have and I like manual transmission. So, if you have a Tundra, I'd like to hear your personal reviews about the truck in general and the auto tranny and fuel consumption. If you like it, why? And why you think it's better than the same year Tacoma. I love the look of the late model crewmax Tundras but looks aren't enough for me to drop $30k or more.

Thanks in advance for any reviews... I'll be checking back.

Hey there, first post. I drive a stock '08 tundra double cab(not crewmax) TRD package. Mileage seems to be pretty consistent across the board. I get 13-14 w/ mixed city/highway driving here in San Diego. Never had a problem w/ it, solid vehicle. Handles well across all terrain, snow, dirt, mud. The A-LSD does a good job imo, I don't believe there are any lockers available for it, atleast not from ARB (correct me if I'm wrong). I'd be more than happy to answer any specific inquiries you might have. I love it, lot's of power!

edit: Auto works well, comes w/ a selectable shifter for towing things or steep hill ascending/descending. At the time I was also considering purchasing a same year Tacoma. I found the difference in cost to be well worth the extra money. I'm not a fan of the new taco for many reasons, it seems overpriced and underpowered; I didn't like the feel of it during the test drive. The Tundra just seems to give you more bang for your buck, and like I said, worth the few extra G's.

Hey, thanks for the reviews. Good to hear you think it's worth the extra money over a Tacoma as I'm in the same boat... choosing between the two. I like the idea of a bigger truck, lifted, of course. I've only been looking at pics of the Tundra lifted but really want to go and try one out. Anyway, thanks.

We bought a 08 limited crewmax brand new. It has the 5.7 and 6 speed auto with seq shift. The only prob we had was a belt tensioner that had a tsb out for that item. We have about 10,000 miles on it and love our truck. Lots of room front and even more in the rear! You could pick one up used easily for 23,000. A crewmax that is. They look great lifted. Check out tundratalk.com for tech and pictures

Mine is a 1st generation Tundra Double cab, it is to wide and long for quite a bit of trails around here. I end up in the cacti and other gotchas along the trail. I would keep the older (the 61 or a 40) and get the newer Tundra for easy trails and hwy running.
Also check out Tundra solutions.com for more as well.

I've owned 40s, 55s, 60s, an 80, and currently own a 100 series, a hilux as well as an 07 tundra. I bought mine brand new 2 years ago and have a little over 50 some thousand miles on it. I've towed my 55 and hj47 to various wheeling events from a couple hours away to 12 hours away. I also towed my 55 with an f350 2wd with powerstroke that I sold a while back. The powerstroke would get 12mpg towing the 55, the tundra gets between 9 and 10 towing at 70-75mph.

The tundra is comfy to drive, tows great, and the auto is a good match with the 5.7l.

when towing, it would be nice to have some airbags in the back to help level the load a little. It doesn't ride bad, but a few drivers get irritated when your headlights seem like they are on highbeams. I also tow a dump trailer with 6,000 pounds of gravel on it a few times a month...it pulls it just fine. The brake controller is already wired up, you just need to make a pig tail from your controller to the plug beneath the dash.

I bought a stripped down version with the only options being the back up camera and the tow mirrors....both are well worth it in my opinion.

If you want to wheel it, you're gonna be disappointed because of the big size. If you want to be able to tow and haul...you won't be disappointed.
