If I had the garage space and it wasn’t my DD, I would have kept it and slowly fixed it myself. They gave me almost 15 on the trade.
Holy s***, $15k for a rusty GX? How many miles were on it?

Yes, that is a bonkers trade number! Also shows that there is no way there was actually $10K in stuff wrong with it, cuz they'd have to sell it for something like $28K to actually make any money off of it (despite the car market being crazy I don't see anything other than a creampuff GX bringing that kind of money). Either way, sounds like you came out just fine with getting that much as a trade, and got a new GX out of it.

You must not be seeing some of the stuff being listed in other GX circles. People huffing paint or something, buyer and seller alike.

There have been 3 for sale on my local CL recently, ranging from all the way down to $4500 (pretty rough with some CEL's, but tempting as a real trail rig) to $13K (decent but not as nice as mine is). They probably have a bit of rust on them being from this area.

That being said I don't doubt folks are trying to sell $12K GX's for $20K plus and folks are willing to buy them in this market. Let me know where these over-priced ones are selling and I'll clean out my local CL of GX's and make a nice profit :).

To the OP, it will be interesting to see if this GX ends on the same dealer's lot, and, if so, how quickly and for what price. My BIL had that happen with a Chrysler product - traded it due to engine problems the dealer said would take $3-4K to fix, and it was for sale on the same lot the next day . Another reason I hate doing business with dealers, they have a double-incentive to over-inflate repair costs to put customers in a new vehicle AND make even more money by flipping a trade that has very little actually wrong with it.

90k miles and it was a different dealer, although this dealer had access to the Lexus database and my recent visit/complaints in the system.

Oh no I totally concur. My local market has not inflated that much, maybe 3-4K average compared to 2019. The “niche” marketplaces are for whatever reason hosting them for what seems to be a flat rate starting price of 20k, with people who’ve added some mods for better or worse pushing that boundary.

What I really find sad are the individuals who have bought their vehicle for what was a decent price, turning around 6 months later and listing for 5-10k higher. And people ask why the market has such a high skew on prices and the answer is the community itself is doing it, or transients to the community.

For sure. It’ll be interesting to see what they do. I figured it was worth $8k-ish prior to this wild market. I estimate I paid about about $8k more for the 460 than I would have too, so probably a wash.

It’s interesting when I spoke to one local shop near my house north of Dallas, they said in the past few years they’ve seen a lot of rusted cars in the shop because of the northerners relocating and trading their cars. They said Texas folks buy them without checking for rust because that’s not something they’d usually worry about.

I’m pretty sure mine will just go to auction.

Rust sucks, but low miles are in high demand.

That one always baffles me because the only thing that can really kill a 120/150 is rust, not miles :). But many folks think these are like a domestic car that is done at 200k.

I keep checking the dealer's website. So far my GX hasn't been listed. They do have a 2007 with 133k listed for $22k. I'm betting they just send mine to auction.

I miss the 470, but so far I really like the 460. It's so smooth and quiet. I definitely need a pedal commander because acceleration feels like a dog compared to my 470. I'll be doing wheels and tires soon, just like my 470, but I probably won't do much until the warranty is up in 2025.

At least some toyota/Lexus dealers in San Diego work with an suv specialist to unload SUVs. The specialist then fixes some things and does basic off-road upgrades to sell these built up SUVs.

Ala MiramarMotorsports near San Diego.

Wow! You left money on the table!

The prices in Australia have been crazy too! Have been reports of people selling 200 series LandCruisers for 20K more than they paid for them 3 and 4 years ago. 20 year old 100 series are still bringing good money. Supposedly all due to Covid and the silicone chip shortage.

I'm not surprised. Someone reached out to me through PM to ask about it. He found the VIN on my original purchase post from back in 2017. Looks like someone added an undercoat to cover up the rust. I wouldn't have been able to sleep at night if I'd done that and sold it private party.

Listed at $25k doesn't mean it will sell at $25k, especially not now with $6 gas. Be glad you are rid of it.

I've changed my flipping strategy to hybrids only. Getting very familiar with Priuses. Won't be buying any v8s soon, though I made A LOT of money flipping them during COVID.

I have to say my 2006 Prius has infinitely better tech than my 2006 GX. Even the display screen seems like it has 4K resolution compared to the Windows 97 screen in the GX. WTF was Toyota thinking?
