I need you guys' input on which tire would be best based on where I go with my FJ.

I wheel the FJ, every week or every other week. I frequent clayish mud, shale, dirt, some rocks, and I plan on taking it to the beach quite often during the summer.

I've heard that MTs really suck on the sand. So I am torn apart here. So I need your opinion on which tire would be best.

Yokohama Geo MT plus or AT Plus II
BGF MT
BFG AT
GoodYear MTR
Bridgestone AT revos

Must MT's aren't much in the MT either...lol

Revo's get rave reviews by all the 80/100 series guys...Nitto Terra Grapplers are also nice, and great in snow.

I like my Cepek FCII's, but they are more a AT/MT blend and as loud as any MT...lol

BFGs ATS are excellent all around tires, having owned numerous sets on my Cruisers. I too ramble in rocks and sand and my ATs seem to do well in just about every element. And the MTs (especially Yokohamas) can get noisy after a while.

I agree with the BFG ATS

timberline mt great all around tire grip to anything really shines in red clay cleans itelf the best ive ever seen.i proplem a bit noisey .drop me a line if ya need a picture:D

Any question regarding tires that isn't answered by "BFG AT/KO" isn't a question...it's an insult.

I don't know what that means, exactly, but I wouldn't own any other tire.

I'd never buy a pair of BFGs again; I've had a blow out with each set of tires I've had, two for two.

Pretty sure I know what that means, exactly, and I would own some other tire.

if i was you i would get the goodyear wrangler mtrs. i will be getting 5 of them in a 285 70 17 for mine. the 33' spare looks absolutly sick!

Ok so here's another question for you guys. Steel wheels as of now are out of question. Unles it's custom made or you are hudini you cannot find one that'll fit. I had the Wheel's manager for Discount Tire Co. Test out after he would swear that'll fit, after me telling him if he could try it on because most wheels wont fit. (Again what does a 20 year old know about wheels) they steelies will not fit. So now we are looking at alloys.

What would be better. Just buy a set of MT/Rs as use them on my daily 30mile comute or fork over a little more cash and get a set of tires/wheels? I have never owned off road tires so I am kinda clueless here.

I've had both BFG AT/KO'S and GY MT/Rs on my 01 tacoma. If you
are looking for a smooth on road and great offroad ride I'd go with the BFG's. I don't like the MT/Rs for daily driving to stiff of a ride. When my MT/Rs wear out I will be going back to the BFG's. I also get all my tires siped by Discount tire co. it really seems to help to get more mileage and better snow traction.

siped?

Hey, East TX FJ: Where are you at in Longview? I saw a blue FJ on HWY 300 between Longview and Gilmer at 6:30am Thursday morning. Could that be you?

Just curious.:)

siped = really small slits in the rubber blocks of the tire...most tires come siped from the factory (AT's and street tires for sure), but some shops can sipe the solid-block MT's. WAY improved ice/wet/snow traction, on and offroad...no rubber is removed from the tire. IMO, siping is best done on only the center tread blocks, otherwise the outers chunk up quickly from offroad abuse. You can also manually sipe with a groover, just flip the blade over to take 2 slices at a time.

grooved = non-DOT approved method of actually removing side strips of rubber. Commonly done on big bias Swampers to increase traction and carcass flexibility...my old SX's were grooved AND siped...

Afco is the groover/siper I own...works great.

guess ill ask my tire dealer about doing that to the wrangler mtrs. ill be moving to wyoming at the end if june and that would deffinatly help

as an FYI, Goodyear Tire stores will not sipe tires...they say that the tires are as the mannufacturer intended them and do not "believe" in siping.

Discount/American Tire will sipe them...and they generally have the best prices/customer service of any large chain store out there.

Now, join the Toyota Land Cruiser Association www.tlca.org, then buy a silver star on Mud so you can post lots of pictures!

A/T - BFG - Had several sets of various trucks and love 'em.
M/T - Toyo Open Country M/T - Very happy with them.

TSL Boggers....

Really like the looks of the BFG AT's but have read a lot of posts saying their not that great in the mud, and mud is diffently what we've got in the deep South (call it gumbo mud down here- very sticky- will take your boots off your feet if your walking through it).

I had the Revos ATs on my Land Rover and they did pretty well in the mud.

My 2 cents.
