I've been wanting to get started on this project for a while now. I decided that I was going to tackle this as I've heard it only takes at most a couple of hours. The weather was right and I had the time so I got busy. Here are some pics of what I was working with. iPhone pics so bare with me.

Once I had the pieces off I had to wash/scrub them up well. Then I let them dry in the sun then got out the Plasti Dip. I put on five coats with 3-5 minutes dry time in between and I let them dry in the sun for about an hour then put the pieces on and allowed them to cure even longer. It came out pretty good. I learned somethings I'd do differently next time, but for now I'm happy with the outcome. It will be a slow process getting to the other pieces, but it's all on my list.
Let me know what you guys think. :)

Looking at the pics again I realized that I forgot to take the painters tape off of the chrome TOYOTA letters. I'll take a pic of that tomorrow. I do kind of like the all blackout grille.

Care to share what you would do differently next time.

I may do this very soon. Never used plati-dip but it seems to be all the rage, especially on another forum I frequent Clubroadster.

X2 on what you'd do differently. Looks good, though

I USED plastidip on parts of mine but with the amount of wheeling down skinny trails with bushes and it scratched off really quickly and looked crappy after about 2 months. I have since used spray paint and it has held perfectly

That looks very good. Tell me about your LEDs please.

It looks awesome ! I hope you have better long term luck with plasti-dip than i did. I have done some bumpers and a grill which both held up only a matter of weeks before starting to bubble and peel. Also did some wheels and ended up taking it off as well. I have been using the Rustoleum Satin Black paint lately and it seems to hold up much better so far on the wheels. Definitely dig the blackout look though !

I have been thinking of doing this on my 62 also.

The chrome tape, or what ever it is is bubbling up in spots. Did you remove the chrome or just scuff it up and paint over it. My thinking is it will still bubble up under the paint, so would like to remove it but not sure how.

If I were to do it again, I'd make sure that I had done it in my garage where I could hang it up to ensure I got all of it evenly. It seems as if it would've been easier that way. We'll see how it holds up.

This is exactly what I've been doing. How did you like the plastiDip?
BCG, I liked it and it was easy to work with. No mess. We'll see how it holds up after some time passes. I like how it came out.

Looking good- can you share the specs of the in-grill LEDs?

Scottc, it's too early to tell how it's going to hold up, but I'll keep you guys posted. If all fails, I can always go the route you did. Thanks for the heads up.

Shady, I scrubbed it with dish sponge (rough on one side and soft on the other). I just cleaned it up really well. Let it dry and sprayed.

Black is the new chrome ...

I ran it for a while with the the TOYOTA lettering blacked out. Then moved to YO showing in chome and finally removing all of the painted painters tape and I think it looks pretty good. Much more to go, but here is a start.

Looks good.. I was thinking about doing the same thing with some small LED drive lights. How are those working for you? Interested in seeing pics with them "blazing" if possible.

Hey Greg,
Thank man. It's a slow process and I have zero patience. :D I like the lights as they do add to my upgraded headlamps. There isn't lots of room for adjustment with them located where I have them, but they are bright and help light up the way. I'll go take a pic and post it for you.
