I hit a snag with 'operation: here comes the boom' and so I dove into my box o' stuff from Mr. Mot.

Here's where I'm stopping tonight.

s***! I know a garage when I see one.....thankfully, not under water!

Can't wait to see the install on this sucker Docster....

Being "overly hydrated" for the last two weeks is nearly justification for this mod.

I need to get some good paint on that cut, then some new fender nuts (the things that hold the fender to the skirt) since most of mine popped on the way out. It'll more than likely be at least the weekend before I get it 'done'.

At least I'm not having to do this in the gravel 'eh?!

Oh man, you're FAST!!!

It would have had it sat in my garage (or living room:D) for a couple of weeks, at least.:hillbilly:

I, too, am curious to see how this all turns out and would like to see a detailed installation write-up.

Thanks for posting and stay dry Doc!

Mot

Here's your detailed write up:

Remove fender.
Follow the template.
Install parts.
Re-install fender.

This is not nearly as complicated as I thought it would be, either that- or I'm having really good luck on this mod. There really aren't a lot of 'parts' to the snork, and installing them is really easy. You DO have to remove the fender though- I don't see any way around it. The elbow and runner to the snork body are installed between engine bay and outer fender skin. The only bad part about removing the fender was that most of my hardware has been in the midwest all of it's life and is really rusty. I busted a bunch of those semi-captive nuts while removing them- I'll need to pick up half a dozen new ones to finish the install.

Even cutting the fender wasn't that tough. I started with a drill bit and made a hole big enough for the blade of my jig saw to fit into. Then, I just followed the outline of the template (traced in sharpie marker on the fender) with the jigsaw blade. Done! I followed the jigsaw cut up with a small grinding stone to take the roughness out of the cut. I put three layers of paint on the cut last night, and will do at least three more today. I hope to have the fender back on tomorrow or Friday. Then I can drill the A-pillar for the snork head mounting bracket-thingy.

To everyone considering the OEM snork- DO IT! it's not nearly as bad as you think it will be. Plus, you get to work with MOT (which is always a bonus!).

I need some input on this- I have to drill 7 and 9 mm holes for the install. Nobody locally carries metric drill bits. Can I get away with using 11/32 and 17/64 (if I can find them...?)?

Maybe test the hardware in those sized holes. use the scrap from what you cut out of the fender, drill the holes, and test your hardware against them.

I am sure the size differences are minimal, but this is your A-pillar we are talking about.

here is what I found:

9mm = .3480------------11/32 = .34375
7mm = .2756------------17/64 = .265625

if you are concerned about the difference PM me your address and I'll mail you the metric bits (I work in a machine shop ;))

Why can't I see the pictures? I am avidly watching your "Boom" post and can see those.

so THAT'S what our fenders look like? Wow....almost didn't recognize it right away.

I appreciate the offer- I'm not convinced the difference is big enough to worry about. I'll just go get the correct SAE drills. Unless you think otherwise?

 They're hosted on the same website- (photobucket) not sure why you can't see 'em?

Yup.

Wasn't able to get much done tonight. But did install the first piece of the snork.

does the toyota snorkle look like a safari one or they different,
should be sweet when all fitted.

They are somewhat different from the head down, not much- but some. The biggest difference is the snorkel head. The OEM snork is much larger and rounder.... Check out the OEM snork group buy thread, page 1- good pics there.

I am assuming that the 9mm holes are for 8mm hardware, and the 7mm holes are for 6mm hardware. If the is the case, you'll be fine with the SAE drill bits.

please take lots of pics illustrating how you deal with the antenna.... it is the sole reason i dont have mine installed yet.

Have you found your template, yet?

Hey Doc,

How accurate was the template, right on or somewhat?
