Just wondering if someone could point me to some open trails in VA. I know there is something near Harrisonburg, but I need more info. Is there camping near there?

Plans fell through for the weekend and want to take the family camping and wheeling.

Any input greatly appreciated.

SP,
I don’t have my maps handy and it’s been a while since I was down in GWNF, but my best advice would be to go to a bookstore and buy a Virginia Gazetteer. (Gazetteer is a series of topo maps by state. Look for a red cover with white lettering and picture of a topo map.) Anyway if you take the highway (forget which one) west out of Harrisonburg 10-15 miles there are a bunch of trails on the north and south side of the highway. If you hit the WV boarder you’ve gone too far.
South Mountain, Kepheart and Dictum are trail names that come to mind that are on the Gazetteer maps all on the north side of the highway. I wouldn’t recommend Dictum unless you have sliders as there is a nasty rock ledge half way down the trail.
Further west, there is a small dam and lake and on the south side of the highway. Lots of wheelers head to a clearing there to camp and it may serve as a good place to find out about more trails. The dirt road that leads to the camping spot also leads to more trails that are rather mild with a few bypasses to hit more challenging obstacles.

Hope that helps.

I know this is kind of an old topic but the road out of harrisonburg that you're looking for is Route 33 west.

I lived in SW VA for 14 years and there are tons of old logging roads and stuff down in that area. Wythe Bland Smythe Grayson Pulaski those counties and further into the tip.

check out www.xjsrule.com

They were featured in the Septmeber O5 issue of 4wheel and Offroad. IT is outside Charlottesville in Crozet. Another trail that way is called Devils Ditch---

damn you filthyrich :D . you beat me to it.

I could use a trip to Devils Ditch if anyone is interested. It's not stocker friendly but it is a good local trail.

You guys know that there is about 1000 acres in Suffolk that is open for off road however, you have to pay 10 or 20 bucks to get in. I will post as soon as I get the map and location.

I will happily pay that.

As for Devils Ditch, I am down as soon as my Stubbs sliders get here next week.

I am too looking for trails in VA since I will be going to college at H-SC in two months. So any good ones with a website perhaps would be great!

Filthy, let me know when you have your sliders on and we can arrange a trip to Devils Ditch. There's also good camping in that area if you're interested.

Link to maps of the popular GWNF off-road trails. Each link is ~ 2MB.

well, sliders are on. I am thinking about heading to Devils Ditch tomorrow. I am too lazt to drive the extra hour to Harrisonburg. Plus, there are going to be a number of clubs running the trails tomorrow.

I am headed out in the am with a buddy (locked, armored, lifted DiscoveryII)

Here are some shots from Saturday. I was just my buddy and me. That disco is very impressive. This was in Madison Co. off 29 at the Sheetz, down the road another 10 miles, then the access.

No pics from the ditch? did you guys make it back to the waterfall?
