ONSC Track car

Club folks.

Anyone ever considered a track car that the club could share? Nothing expensive. Just a fun car that we could use for driving schools at vir.

I would like to attend about two of these days a year. Having a car sitting around for all the other 363 days seems like a huge waste. Others could enjoy it as well.

No. Not at all. A couple of partners owning a track car that club members could use for driving school days.

Car share but for a track car. Track car share.

Insurance Liability is scarier.

interesting idea, I would look into the legalities of team racing first to get an idea. Basic blue print for sharing all mentioned above. I'd form a corporation and let the corp buy the car and all related items. Run it at a loss and take the tax break.

Yeah there is no way this can be an official club thing due to reasons above.

I do however like the idea, although i'm not financially able to participate at this time.

Back in High School in Socal where you could still find running 69 camaros for $500 my friends and I used to buy them all put $ into fixing them and swapping in bigger motors and then raced them at pomona and LACR for a few months, sold them and started with another.

We had plans to do a road course track car using a 80's iroc camaro but it never happend as a few of us moved away.

It is a fun thing to do with friends but for the most part it needs to be done with people that live close by to each other.

Sold my last track car about 4 years ago and still have a non-rusted 240Z I'm not sure what to do with. Current thoughts are to keep it as is and let it become the son's car in 11 years if he wants it. That said I turn 50 this year and have told myself somehow or another I would like to get some seat time and see if I've lost my touch. Will watch this thread to see what happens.

Uh, looking to part with this 240? I've been considering getting something to run around in that's lower to the ground.

I would like to build something for street/track use. Just needs a title and a straight body/chassis, I can take care of the rest.

We couldn't make it an official club car, but I'm sure a couple of us could work out something out to have fun in.

Maybe just use it on the track. That way we could keep it off the street.

I am thinking trailer and car. You get two keys, trailer key and car key. ;<)

The car and trailer could live at a farm in Red Oak. Maybe one day an enclosed trailer.

Not looking for a race car. Just something fun to drive on the track, to shift gears and a vehicle for girls to learn on when the time comes. (I would be responsible for the clutch, ;<)

Over the holidays, I will investigate further.

When I figure this out, the car would be available to rent as well. Maybe you pay by changing oil, fixing something, adding a part, etc. Making sure you put gas in it and fixing any damage you may cause on track.

The car that keeps popping up. Been up there for 5 months so far on Craigslist. This may be a little to pricey but lots of items are already done.

As someone in the insurance industry for both commercial and personal, it could be a complicated (and expensive) auto policy. No one would write it as a personal policy and the commercial side would probably require an excess carrier to write the insurance or Lloyds of London and that's where you see the really high premiums. Now insurance companies will write a track car, but the real problem you will run into is the vehicle being exposed to a lack of experienced track drivers operating the vehicles.

Now that being said, if you do get it, make sure to come to me for the insurance so I get that commission

Putzing on the computer and found some pics of the old, now gone, track car and of the 240. Before letting the track car go I did pull the engine, tranny, and rear end which is now in the 240.

What car is cheap to buy, cheap to maintain, not a loss when it is totaled, EZ to get JY parts, fun to drive?
The are 2 solutions: Miata or E30/36. Buy a sub $1000 car, sell/scrap all the non essentials, buy a rollcage kit for $600, another $1000 for track tires, used wheels, race pads and misc tuneup/repair part. You can be on track in a decent car for $2000, split that 4 ways it's only $500 to get to your first track day (or 24HL/CC/AER/WRL race.) Insurance/title/plates not required for a track car.

From personal experience, I recommend that one person be appointed benevolent overlord to make decisions. BO listens to participants thoughts, then decides what money should be spent on what tires to go to which tracks.

Miata certainly has a lot of attractive features. Large aftermarket following for performance parts, can be had for cheap, and the web is rich with forums of Miata road course folks. Because they have been around so long finding a retired SCCA or NASA ride with much of the work already done is within reason:

Good article from 2010 that explains the insurance requirements for regulated and IHRA registered tracks (at least in NC). It looks like in these situations, the track takes on most of the liability and provides a master policy in case of accidents
