First off "Aloha" guys! I'm here for the cool trailer tech and to drool over the cool Toyota's I will never have a chance to own!:D

I was inspired by Drew's build and decided to start my own build. I was planning to use 2X2" box but budgetary constraints forced me to use what I had. Which was a 10 year 20' stick of 1/4" angle.
I was planning on a MilSpec M8 style build(4'X4') but after mock up I decided that it was way too small for what I wanted it to do. Namely pack my coolers and fishing gear for hunting and fishing camping trips. Also tossed in would be the occasionaly hauling of tile or gravel.

I ended up using the specs for the M416, 40" wide by 72" long and a 48" tongue to clear the back of my Grand Wag or Tahoe.

I'm almost done with the frame I need to add gussets to the corners and braces and hang the axle. Once my adjustable lunette channel get's here I'll be done with the frame and can move on to boxing it.
Where are you guys hanging the axle? 60/40 bias? Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the good tech and sweet site!
Here's some progress pics after a couple of hours of welding.

Aloha!

Sweet build bud, keep it up. The 60/40 split would be a safe place to hang that axle! :D

Glad to see another build!

Drew

Yeah I'm not sure how I want to set up the box yet, still brainstorming. Ideas are welcome!

Mahalo Drew! I've had these parts forever but I always used my M101a2 for hauling. Now that I sold it your build got me revved up to build something a little smaller and easier to tow off road.

Trailer update, I went with a 70/30 bias and welded up the hangers. Once I get the bearings and tires mounted I'll have a set of 35" Procomps on there.
I plan to either re-drill the hubs or use adapters to convert it to 6 lug like my jeep.
Does anyone know how hard it is to re-drill the hubs? Can I do this on my press or should I go to a shop?Forgot to snap pics before I put it away, went out in the rain to get these.

Is anyone having a hard time with the forum? I can't edit my post or add images with the icons. Started from last night, is it my settings ot the board?

Looks like it was my settings, something must have got changed.

Depending on the axle you are using, you may be able to get hubs and drums with the lug pattern you need. Check on Etrailerpart.com to see if any of the hubs will fit your axle's spindles. Here is their hub and drum page.

http://www.southwestwheel.com/store/c-172-hubs-and-drums.aspx

If you re-drill your current hubs, I'd have a shop do it.

I'm using an old M416a1 axle so swapping it to a more standard hub won't be easy according to the articles I read.

I'd buy a new axle but I'm building this cheap. So far I only have money in the lunette and mount, everything else I had laying around or got free.

I may end up taking it to a shop, I'm calling around to check on rates. If not I'll try it myself. I have enough eqipment to do it, just not the experience.

I have an M416. (You can check out my rebuild of the trailer in my signature.) I have done a lot of checking and you cannot swap the hubs and drums on the M416 axle. From what I have found, they are similar to those on the front axle of a 50s CJ3A. I have looked closely at my hub/drum assembly and determined that you cannot re-drill them to a 6 lug pattern. Doing so would leave an unsupported area on one of the lugs. This is because the hub is thicker where the current lugs go through and that is what the drum sits on. So the only way to change the lug pattern is to swap axles.:crybaby:

Now, the Canadian M101 trailer axle is a different story. You can swap out the hub/drum assemblies to match most lug patterns. This is because it uses a standard 3500 Lb axle spindle.

Good luck.

What size is the axle spindle nut for the 416 or 416a1? I read it was the same as the early CJ5's but I have the spindle nuts from the CJ5 and they do not work on the axle. The 5' spindle is huge compared to the 1" axle spindle on the trailer.
On the lug pattern what I may do is weld the existing lug holes closed and cut a 3/8" plate cut to fit inside of the hub and drill that to the 6 lug pattern. TIG it up from behind and I should be good to go. A machinist friend said he could cut the plates for me on his CNC machine

Hey Kevin took a look at your build and our axles are different. the 416a1 is tapered, which I have, the 416 is not and I bet is the same size as the early CJ5 spindle nuts. From your pics it could pass for a CJ5 spindle in one of the pics. I need to find out the thread/nut size for the a1.

Sorry, I forgot that the M416 and the M416A1 axles are different. The M416A1 has surge brakes, while the M416 only has a parking brake. You need to measure the spindle for the diameter where each bearing sits. This will give you the ID of the bearings. Then you can check on the on the hub/drum page of Etrailerpart.com for any matching hubs. Some of the listings have the bearing ID. On the other listings, you can search the site by bearing number to find the ID. So, you might be able to swap hubs. Are you going to try to use the surge brakes on this trailer?

No I won't be using the brakes. I cross referenced the bearing #'s and I found replacements at NAPA I'm headed there to see if they have the spindle nut too.
