I recently noticed a ticking type noise from the radio when the engine is running, when listening to FM radio stations.
spark plugs (OEM platinum ) and wires (OEM) were replaced about 40k miles ago.
The radio is the stock unit, and belive it or not everything still works including the CD player :o

Does the condition go away when it is hot and or cold? It most likely is a ground issue. Since it only does it on FM, it could be on that circut board or maybe the antenna.

When you say hot or cold, do you mean the engine or the ambient temp? Since it just became noticeable I also assumed something came lose, is there a ground strap on the radio itself?
does the antenna ground via the drive motor?

interesting, I am having trouble with AM in the 650 range. Must be something having to do with the antenna (mast cable broke in my case) cuz it seems like it's doing it sometimes or not depending on how much the antenna is out or I wiggled it.

Most likely it is not the ground on the radio iteslf but a solder ground on a board. I was curious about the ambient temp. Expansion and contraction.

BMT,
I was afraid that was why you asked about the temp :(
I'll pay close attention, but I think it does it all the time regardless of the temp

I recently noticed the same ticking on the higher FM frequencies. Ever since headgasket and plug wires replaced.

I doubt that it is the radio. Faulty ground seems probable, where should I look?

My 80 started doing this ever since it had a Toyota Service ???
I too suspect an earth problem, I have checked all the connections etc i can EASILY get too. I can't see where the antenna lead for the radio comes out of the antenna, neither can i feel in there. Don't particularly want to have all the dash out or is radio access simple ?.
Maybe I'll live with it or just play tapes :(
