Trying to reply to all these old topics which contain a wealth of information and the bloody things are locked; a nuance (or nuisance)?

Makes sense for the classifieds but not tech. :bang:

Noticed that myself. I generally like to seach and find a solution to my problem, if I can't slove it with the info I have dug up, I bring back a thread that is related (with a good title, search wise) and try and sort it out. Closing them only makes sense in a perfect world once all the questions have been answered......maybe we are there. Or it may be related to a server switch over or technical issue.

Cheerleaders...... LOL

"Nuance or nuisance:

good
bad
ugly"

I'd like to vote that it's silly to lock old threads, many times I've found the answers I'm looking for and the thread is closed so I can't post a follow up question, or thank the contributors. The problem is, your poll is worded terribly, I'm not sure which box to check!

I don't like it either. It promotes 50 threads on the same topics, rendering search useless.

Just an FYI, all of the closed threads can be reopened by the person who started the thread. I have done this on half a dozen of my own threads.

additionally, as noted in a handful of posts in the HELP forum, you can simply report the thread and one of the mods can re-open it.

IMO, bumping an old thread sometimes prevents a new one being made. Either way, new threads that pop up with topics that have been covered already doesn't bother me much like it seems to bother others. I just skip over them.

Very good point!

Sidenote: I think there is more of an issue with members not knowing how to properly search. I also realize some may be too lazy to search.:bang:

It doesn't matter if Mud or FJCF, Google results more relevant threads than the App ( about all I ever use is IPhone) can.

How I earned

I know.

But it does still change (for the worse) the way the forum works.

But hey, if that's the way it has to be, then so be it. :meh:

It was a run-once script that closed threads with zero activity for 6 months or more. Considering that was a few months ago, it's likely stuff with no activity for 9 months.

The issues that were occurring have stopped, and hopefully won't return. I've implemented a LOT of additional spam/registration changes since as well. Given the lack of spam that gets thru here, it's mostly effective.

Current log stats:
vbStopForumSpam Log Viewer (page 1/27,456) | There are 411,832 total log entries.

The current system was turned on Sept 11, 2010...411k attempted spammer registrations in 2-1/2 years.

Another site I manage registers over 40-50 spammers daily (tho almost none get thru to posting). Unfortunately, the forum software and the forum spam systems available don't work nearly as well as what I've implemented here when it comes to blocking registrations and reporting.

I usually handle 4-5 reports direct daily as it is, as well as the few that get thru each week and actually post (and get reported by the membership)

unsure why I never thot of this before...I just emailed the xml file to my developer to see if its easily reverse-engineered...

will also help to find out if the additional spam adjustments made in the past few months are effective...

stay tuned...
