Oil is coming out of the exhust manifold ?? And there seems to be a oily residue in the carb. Any ideas what causes this. Do I need new rings. The truck will not get up past 45mph. Stupid questions, but I am no mechanic. Have good oil pressure, and Plugs are not that badly fouled(carbon)!!! Thanks

Depends where the head gasket broke. It might have just let a oil line leak into the combustion chamber.

Pull the plugs and see if there is burned oil on any of them.

Ok, well maybe the valve cover gasket has gone bad. Check that.

Now that would be unrelated to the problem of not being able to get over 45. What gear is that in? Does it run roughly at idle? Where does it idle at?

Shoot some carb cleaner through all the brass lines coming from the carb. See if that helps.

Also, get a vacuum gague and test the manifold vacuum. That's a good place to start.

What does it do at 45? Just stop accelerating? Does it run well and start OK up to that point?

If it runs rough in general I'd be lookin for a vaccum leak. Other wise maybe the EGR valve.

Get an FSM or check the archives here. If you are missing lines, or they are not plugged in to the right places, your truck may run as you described. Not sure about the oily manifold, but I would definately fix the vacuum problem.

Like I said, the oily manifold is probably the valve cover gasket.

Who put on the Rochester 2bbl? That is probably why it won't run correctly.

Did you try tuning it?

PCV / EGR is not venting the crankcase, plus worn rings, cranked head, or bad HG, could cause these symptoms.

also like GLTH said. could just be valve cover. are you sure its coming from the manifold? some time bad oil leads go everywhere and are hard to track

The infamous crack in the intake manifold between the exhaust manifold and carburetor might account for the oily residue in the carb and the rough running...but oil actually leaking out the exhaust manifold?!? Could blow-by be so severe due to worn or broken rings that exhaust leaks turn into oil leaks?
Save the manifold gasket for later, take off the head and look for a crack before you put it back together.

Not the intake, but against the head is the leak. Getting the gasket today, for the repiar. It was running poor due to the fact the previous owner, had the spark plug wires on the WRONG cylinders!!!! Cant believe I picked this up for 450.00, with a "blown motor", and all it was is the wires. Cant believe it. Will keep you updated on the repair. Thanks for the responses.
