I would start with the distributor "O" ring, quite common to become brittle over time and begin to leak. I replaced mine and it the leak I had at the distributor. Read the FSM on pulling the distributor if you aren't familiar with it.
When I pulled my distributor out someone had galled the sealing surface badly. It would barely come out. There was no way I could run it so I had to smooth it with emery cloth & use a slightly larger o-ring Hope it doesn't leak.
i have the exact same leak. I plan on taking care of it soon.
Never having removed a distributor, i'm a bit sketched about it. I will look at the FSM, but i'm guessing i'll just mark it's orientation with a paint pen and re install it at the marks???
Its easy. It helps if you take the cap off and note the positioning. When you put it back together you can line the teeth of the gears up perfectly and get it right back to where it was; no need to set the engine at TDC or anything.
how bad is it if it's off by tooth on the gear? - I accidentially wiped off my mark so I guessed at the position. The rotor is roughly the same position as when I pulled it out (could be exact but..not sure)
Truck idles at 645rpms and revs smooth... should I get the timing checked out or am I ok?
It would be bad if it was off one tooth. Then again you'd notice immediately. I wouldn't pay someone to check the timing for what you'd pay you can pickup a timing light and do it yourself and have it for next time. IMO it is worth checking it. If you are in Cali they will check it at smog time and if it's off they will fail you. Also it could be off (slightly advanced) and you might not notice it running prro. It may actually run better.
