It's amazing how a simple hose can cause so many probs at 3:00 in the morning, on the side of the highway, in a downpour. Didn't realize it was there, but thought I would save somebody else the excitement of "oil cooler line hose explosion" If you haven't checked it, do it! Darren 1991 196k

Darren,
Was it the coolant line? The one that is right above all of the steering linkage and right below the oil filter? The one that is VERY visable, but you need arms made of rubber to touch it?? Let me guess......many previous oil changes turned the coolant hose into a gummy mess from the oil leaking out of the filter during replacement?? You're not alone here. I have 176K on my '91 and decided to replace the hose last week in my heated garage. Must not have been any fun on the side of the road! Mine turned my hands black from the degraded rubber. It's funny (bad choice of words) that this hose isn't mentioned a lot on this site. I picked up a hint on oil changes with this engine...poke a hole in the top of the filter BEFORE you break the seal. I did this on the last oil change and didn't spill a drop. The first time I changed the oil on my 80 I had oil all over the floor (and soaked the oil coolant hose) and side of the engine.

Good advise to check it!
Mark
