Changing the oil on a Hundy is about as easy as it gets. That said, it annoys me when I go to take the old filter off and oil starts dribbling all over the place. With the front skid plate I have installed (Slee), there is no direct downward path for the oil to drip so it slowly finds its way all over the undercarriage and ultimately, the garage floor. I've tried jamming rags around the area but I always end up with oil spots on the ground.

Today, I came up with a pretty solid work around. Here's what you'll need:

  • 1 gallon Ziploc bag (or similar)
  • 2-3 rubber bands
  • Pointed punch
  • Hammer

  1. Do this:
    eDSNs4OhI8zden4KW7mENv1yrFij-YW1xOf7lEbW-1qSSOgYJpdx_j_IiIJ-z6QbNWKRqXcGmXX-KXJpbe8AvpT30jFbWaGF8a2d-Bj1lk9x0fpp7X-BTIgNE7BTQiiwT254S0LiAYhpfNEeR_6BjIJgCKk0K2S3ZOPA5pIg59kNl5OrY7Ssnv5zxhyxEdap6jj5L1wT2S8sdfuTDjxcJTuv3k9Dqll9VcV4Yio1h5AZlAM2fN3rsb4T0oGoG3s-haKd8uZswLACRisO_V7TGsMPZ_SNtpK-0EGCKXjV1kKvEFbNrGWVAD6GYv_WhYw-cLguJSsPStThkiKUkuEGTw0LSBYOfYYgNA8bSIo0xZA_YiiLlDMJB_t7HlUhz1Wql82t7_EbnGYR98K0R-stmcrT8xraIUMNRNKjUvSHmokZPFArYfXqEvKj6if0wWLdwLYfyLaSExGpe9VZDHqmD6DbO4s-Jj8NbZTLOrBDjYlWgoJPVs0CvcT6M16tdshR4EjY9q9ljDzLLQb5OUcrKCL9=w506-h899-no

  2. Then do this (on the old oil filter while it is still attached):
    p0GtIHNdQVTMWEGIOOFpX5sCjEwFn67PIYfCe7gJYjAbBV_4FhADIb8Lh6PqUfqJuZbUKT6hImpgRpsQEvqijbYzCAYtrvh__QUO1QXx8eW4F5gAxjsMFGqdN3V49JYvE5rCMvP3YCL9d4es_-JpfO7MZ-dQ0uZvvGRCyXlC8EM6ZTgtvfJOqZfAxkakEJWVdcoKvaVhUhFlRQ4R-_trr1xBcuOhe_3eWJd4SIAsuafdDCmKwGmCYoBcOp6tnwgVsLfmbnQy4KWKILym3KEoDbfrjWAh1m-vM5EFi3gkGsBWVfxOiAXXukFyBBXo6sF4FwUA3wu1vbqrTiH8RD7ha34BggGsDBVEdGGay3icn9nOkpw-Uk1HlfNVmPtAu4FBRUCWEIblzI_QXs8f1JExRQFwk3aTXHIxLGKwrbdYDizZOTMeo5MFVUbaCKdWesJ6JrFbWM_3w8WpgRHmwdauU4kiovJjorhOqtv4Ln_FzCKxAhCmnh1YIUp5fJQ64LpAHJyf4D6cVIM5k60u2luKQ8Nl=w506-h899-no

  3. Punch a hole in the bottommost point of the old oil filter - Don't worry, oil is not going to gush out of the little hole you put in the baggie.

  4. Sit back and think about awesome stuff like Bigfoot, rail guns, and what Elizabeth Hurley looked like during the Austin Powers era.

    Here... I'll help you:

  5. When the oil filter is ready to come off, the bag will look like this:

  6. Proceed with your normally scheduled oil change!

DISCLAIMER:

Let me clarify. This will not completely rectify the issue with oil coming out of the block when you unscrew the old oil filter but it will greatly reduce the amount of oil you have to deal with. When I pulled the old filter after draining it, I had a rag underneath and it easily caught the (greatly reduced) dribbles.

Brilliant!

Great idea, thanks for sharing.

I'm kinda ticked that I didn't think of this...

BTW, step 4 is gold.

That's just how pfran rolls.

Designed by a genius to be used by idiots! This will save me a lot of mess and cleanup time.

Maybe sell a kit to include a bag and rubber band. Some one would buy it. $5.95 each plus shipping and handling. All sales are final.

Don't forget to add a disclaimer regarding getting your hands dirty or injuries received from changing "hot" oil.

LOL! and thanks for sharing.

Don't you guys take advantage of the toyota oil spill director? Back off the oil filter and let the oil drain off the designed spill ledge for a few minutes and then remove the filter? This leaves very little mess for me.

With my setup, the spill shield directs oil on to my front skid plate. This guide mostly benefits those running skid plates which block the straight-down path oil would typically take off of the spill director/ledge and into a waiting catch pan.

Great tip.

Only thing I would add would be to make sure that your old filter will turn before you puncture.[/QUOTE]

That is good to add that tip but I would prefer to add two more Elizabeth pictures

I saw the Elizabeth Hurley stuff. Wow.

What was that about oil???

Like @pfran42 said, the Slee front skid gets in the way.

I take my oil filter box and fold it to make a little ramp from the spill lip to my oil pan
