Needing some help here guys. I'm not too GPS savvy so I'm having a heck of a time planning out a trip thru Ouachita Mountains (K-Trail) then to & thru Ozark NF. What's my best (ie. plain-Jane simple to read) map option to plan this out with? I don't have an Android device so Back Country Navigator is out. I have an iPhone or an iPad that I can use to download some maps to. What my options to make this happen? Thanks!

In theory, downloading map data for Google Maps should work. Download and use offline areas - Maps for mobile Help In practice, I don't think Google Maps is great for forest roads, let alone trails. I have a Garmin GPS, and then downloaded some open source maps to it. That took more time and effort than I'd want to guide another person through; but the result has worked out pretty well. I hope you get other replies, with current options that work well (because I'm interested).

PDF Maps Mobile App and the maps from the NF site: Ozark-St. Francis National Forests - Maps & Publications

It's fantastic. My son and I followed completely unmarked fire roads for hours in the Tahoe NF without ever worried about being lost. It's like cheating.
Downloading the app now. Then I have to figure out how to get the NF map into the app, I guess. Thanks a ton!!!

***EDIT*** The maps download in the app for free very easily. This should help a ton. Thanks!!!!

I'm new at this too. I see where you can search for maps and I loaded the one you mentioned above. I've set pins. How do you then navigate between the two? The little Nave arrow didn't do anything and my lat/long didn't accurately reflect the pin-set on google maps? Thanks!

You'll use the navigation/directions like you would normally navigating to a dropped pin. The difference is is that you have to physically be within the maps perimeter for it to be able to navigate you. At least that's how I'm understanding it. It won't be good until you are on location, so to speak. It's a KML file so you can download it to your computer, or email it to yourself, and open it with Google Earth or some other program(pretty sure Android Operating System can read it but iOS can't)that can read KML files. All that was totally foreign to me 3 days ago! It took me about 1.5 hrs to drop all the pins to map HWM/OOT. What trail are you mapping?

Look up MVUM maps for forest service lands through the pdf app and also maps for download off of the National forest sites.

Assuming you're talking about Avenza:

I don't know that there are any "navigation" features. You should get the map on a larger computer and plan your route in advance, then use the map to locate yourself while you're enroute.

I have used both Gaia GPS and Scenic Maps Apps on iPad, both are great. Gaia has a lot more detail and can sync with a desktop pretty easily with their free account.

I use cal topo to figure out which maps I like, then Gaia GPS to download those maps and record tracks.
