Today Michelle Russell and I met with Dave Walters and David Todd of TN Forestry and Bob Richards Green Way and Trails coordinator ( controller TN of RTP Funds) to discuss OHV trails on State Forest land.
They are in favor of multi use on forest lands and were very receptive to OHV trails in selected areas as long as they are constructed correctly and are not an erosion issue.
Our proposal for the trail area was Cedars of Lebanon State Forest, the area meets most of the requirements, however it has a large number of rare plants. Their counter proposal was Prentice Cooper State Forest near Chattanooga which already has trails. The trails were not planned or laid out.

We will schedule the next meeting at Prentice Cooper to review the possibilities there and hopefully come to agreement on a plan of action. We will need a club in the area to take point on the project

I have not ridden the area, those that have, please let me know what you think of the possibilities for the area.

I drove around Prentice Cooper last year. Most of it is pretty flat as it's on top of the ridge. As far as natural rock crawling, nothing popped out at me. It would take a lot of construction but there is a lot of land up there. Didn't see any hippies though.

:meh: haven't had hippies around here since 1972. I thought all the rednecks and moonshiners ran them off. Todds impresion of that area is about the same as mine. i have not been there in many years but i remember it was not a challenge for a 40 with open diffs and 31" mt.

I have run through Prentice Cooper (on foot). I did not see much that would lend itself to fun off roading (not that I know how to drive - just wrench)

We picked Prentice Cooper for our first project because it is as close as we could get to GA, so you would have less of an exciuse not to ride with us. The plan is to spend RTP funds and build trails.

No!Recreational Trails Program. The Fed's return a small portion of the gas tax money they collect, which is associated with use OHV, to the states. The money is split between motorized and non-motorized trails. In most states including TN it can only be used on government land and is a 80/20% cost share, we usually provide the 20% in volunteer labor on OHV trails..

Is that similar to the Bill recently introduced in NC?
