ooh I love math puzzles.
800 miles/wk @ 14 mpg @ $2/gallon = $115/wk
800 miles/wk @ 30 mpg @ $2 gallon = $53/wk
800 miles/wk @ 50 mpg @ $2 gallon = $32/wk
Assuming $2/gallon, and not counting 19,000 miles worth of wear and tear on the 80, you will save $240 / month on gas with a 30 mpg or $320/month with a 50mpg. That's a savings of $1450 over 6 months with a 30 mpg econobox or $1990 with a 50 mpg. If gas goes up further, you save more. For every 25 cents a gallon gas goes up you will save another $30/month with a 30 mpg vehicle.
If you can buy, maintain, insure and then sell an old beater econo box with another 19,000 miles on it without spending more than that overall you are a miracle worker. Plus you are driving a pos all day. I would drive the 80 and spend some money tuning it up perfectly to get you 16 mpg.
Now back to when train B passes train A assuming a grade of...
